About This Work
Hearing Water Through Paint
The sound of water emerges from this canvas with almost audible presence. Li Tiexiang captures the moment of still attention when a figure pauses to listen to the spring's murmur, creating a painting that operates in the space between visual and auditory experience. The composition invites the viewer into that same contemplative state.
The Attentive Figure by the Stream
The scene depicts a figure seated beside a mountain stream, the water cascading over rocks in the foreground. Li employs a contemporary realist approach that draws from his training at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, combining academic technique with Chinese landscape sensibility. The brushwork shows the confidence of an artist who has spent decades studying both Western and Eastern pictorial traditions.
Transparency in Motion
Li builds the water forms through layered glazes that capture the transparency and movement of the stream. The rocks receive heavier impasto, their solid presence contrasting with the fluid water. The figure is rendered with careful attention to posture and gesture, the tilt of the head suggesting active listening. This variation in paint handling creates visual rhythm across the composition.
The Cool Palette of Mountain Shade
The palette draws from cool tones dominated by blues and greens, the colors of water and forest shade. Warm accents appear in the figure's garments and the autumn leaves scattered on rocks, providing compositional balance. The light filters through canopy cover, creating dappled patterns that dance across the water surface and the figure's form. The composition employs a triangular structure, with the figure at the apex and the stream forming the base. Li Tiexiang's career provides context for this work. A member of the China Artists Association and former president of the Shenzhen Dafen Artists Association, he has received institutional recognition including the title of Outstanding Expert of Longgang District. His awards include honors at the National Folk Painting Competition and the National Workers' Art Competition. This canvas demonstrates the continuing relevance of figurative landscape painting. The combination of technical precision and atmospheric sensitivity positions the work within a tradition that values both observation and poetic suggestion.
