Art appreciation

The white horse stands laterally across the middle of the painting and turns its head towards the woman at the right. Her long dress and raised arm almost join the pale contour of its neck. Flowering branches extend overhead, creating a canopy of small marks, while the grass securely receives the horse’s hooves and the hem of the dress. With no onlookers or competing incident, attention remains on the reciprocal approach of person and animal.

Cool white, pale grey, and touches of pink-violet model the horse, with clear tonal turns along its back and belly. The woman’s dress uses related light colours in longer, softer strokes, connecting the two forms without confusing them. Fine leaf and blossom marks alternate with broader green passages in the background. Dark colour is reserved for trunk, mane, and limited shadow, so the calm atmosphere grows from a controlled light palette rather than an empty setting.

Li has worked repeatedly with figures, horses, and landscape. His Russian academic training emphasises anatomy, proportion, and space; in his mature work, lyrical colour softens that structure. All three concerns meet here. The horse requires a convincing stance, the woman’s gesture establishes the bond, and field and blossom supply the season. By closely judging the interval between hand and neck, lowered head and approaching body, Li allows trust to appear just before touch.

Within academic realism, the horse tests an artist’s understanding of anatomy and movement and has often carried themes of power, speed, or history. Lyrical figure painting gives greater attention to pose, light, and the relationship between a person and a setting. Stillness brings these traditions together in a spring landscape, setting aside gallop and heroic display in favour of a composed encounter.

Li studied art at Northeast Normal University and later deepened his drawing and oil-painting practice through training associated with the Repin Academy. This background accounts for the stable, specific horse. His sensitivity to outdoor light allows horse, dress, and flowering trees to share a restrained colour range. Structure and atmosphere support one another, keeping the scene observant and emotionally quiet.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Yadong, born in 1954 in Siping, Jilin, graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Northeast Normal University. He later studied drawing and oil painting at the Repin Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg under Professor Alexander Bestrov.

Li has long worked within the Siping art community, serving as chairman of the Siping Oil Painting Society and as a council member of the local artists association. His subjects include figures, horses and landscapes. His academic training is visible in the close attention he gives to anatomy, proportion and the placement of bodies within outdoor space.

The Russian realist method strengthened his use of drawing and tonal modelling. In later work, he retained that structure while loosening the handling of sky, vegetation and reflected light, allowing animals and figures to remain solid within changing weather and open terrain.
