In Stillness, Li Yadong reduces the pastoral scene to a measured encounter between a white horse and a woman dressed in white. The two pale forms occupy the center of a dense green field, their proximity establishing a quiet axis against the surrounding trees. Nothing in the composition is forced into anecdote; the painting holds its subject at the point where observation, restraint, and atmosphere meet.

The chromatic structure is deliberately spare. Greens move from grass to foliage in closely held tonal passages, while the horse and the woman's clothing introduce a calibrated white that neither dominates nor dissolves. Li's handling of edges is particularly important: the horse is modeled with soft transitions rather than hard contour, and the field is built through open brushwork that lets the surface remain active without disturbing the scene's composure.

The work may be placed within a lineage of equestrian and pastoral painting, yet its authority lies in understatement. Artist introduction

Li Yadong, born in 1954 in Siping, Jilin, is a contemporary Chinese oil painter shaped by northeastern academic training and later study at the Repin Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg under Professor Alexander Bestrov. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Northeast Normal University and has long been associated with the Siping art community, serving as chairman of the Siping Oil Painting Society and as a council member of the local artists association.

His practice centers on figurative painting, horses, and landscape subjects, combining disciplined anatomical structure with a lyrical sense of outdoor light. Russian academic realism appears in his attention to drawing, proportion, and spatial atmosphere, while his mature works soften that structure through poetic color and contemplative natural settings. His works have appeared in regional exhibitions and in historical-theme art events, and have entered private and gallery collections in Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, and other places.
