Art appreciation

Blue-grey spreads across most of the painting, but it never settles into one continuous field. Ochre appears through scraped openings and along broken edges; dark green, red and pink marks remain as smaller interruptions. Some passages resemble partial figures or fragments of landscape, yet none is complete enough to control the image. The composition depends on how these remnants appear, recede and meet the surrounding layers.

The surface carries several distinct actions. Wider tools drag paint into horizontal and vertical bands. Elsewhere, closely spaced curved ridges circle an edge or press through a thicker deposit. Thin scratches expose earlier colour, while flatter grey-blue passages cover parts of the more active texture. These differences create a material rhythm: dense ridges slow the eye at particular knots, and broad scraped areas reopen the field around them.

Ribas is best known for sustained painting before the Provençal landscape, where changing light requires close attention to colour beside colour. His abstract practice can be understood through the same sensitivity. Here, warm ochre and small red-green accents remain embedded within a cooler structure, and the painting records decisions of covering, revealing and redirecting rather than a named place.

Style and context

European Art Informel and related post-war abstraction brought gesture, thickness and the worked surface to the centre of painting. Instead of organising a picture around a depicted subject, artists allowed dragging, scraping and accumulation to establish structure. The history is relevant to Abstract Series because its clearest relations are carried by the behaviour of paint itself.

The work shares that material emphasis but keeps colour carefully distributed across the full field. Repeated curved grooves are set against broader planar drags, and warm fragments remain visible beneath cooler layers. It therefore combines an informal, process-led surface with a measured chromatic order. Ribas's experience of plein-air colour provides practice context for that order, while the non-representational construction remains specific to this painting.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Denis Ribas was born in Perpignan, France, in 1954 and is of Catalan origin. He studied for a time at the Beaux-Arts in Perpignan with the painter Germain Bonnel and also pursued competitive athletics, becoming French runner-up in the 4 × 400 metre relay in 1978. When he returned to painting, discipline and rapid decision-making became part of his outdoor method.

He works directly before the landscapes of Provence and the Céret region, generally without a preparatory drawing or later studio revision. Pure colour, broad strokes and thick paint are brought together in a single session, with olive trees, fields, mountains and Mediterranean light recurring throughout his work.

Ribas moved from a more Impressionist approach to figurative landscape towards a more personal, expressionist language. In some works the sky contracts while earth, cast shadow and foreground colour expand; broad impasto brings natural forms close to abstraction. His Abstract Series can be understood within that documented development.
