Painting analysis

A dark band runs across the lower third of this vertical canvas. Above it, warm red and orange pile up in thick strokes. Below, the colour goes cooler — deep blue-green and dark indigo, with a brown-black that could be earth or deep water. The painting is abstract, but it feels like a landscape. One senses the sky above and the ground below, even though nothing is actually painted that way.

The surface tells a story of its making. Ribas used a palette knife to scrape and drag the paint, leaving grooves where the underlayer shows through. Near the centre, a patch of gold ochre appears where he scraped back the dark paint to reveal the colour underneath — not random, but placed where it catches the eye and holds it. The raised ridges cast tiny shadows when viewed from the side. The whole painting shifts depending on the light in the room.

Ribas has spent decades painting outdoors in Provence, and that experience lives in the colours here — the same warm ochres and violet shadows that fill his landscape paintings, just set free from any actual view. It is a smaller work, vertical, the kind of painting that pulls the viewer in close. It would work well on a wall that gets changing light through the day. Oil on canvas, 48 × 63 cm.

Denis Ribas has spent his whole career painting the landscape around Provence — the fields, the farmhouses, the olive trees. After decades of looking at the same hills in different light, his abstract paintings carry a real sense of place even though nothing is actually depicted. This is abstraction rooted in experience rather than theory.

The closest comparisons are with the late abstract works of Nicolas de Staël, who also painted the south of France and built forms from accumulated colour and surface texture. Like de Staël, Ribas arrives at abstraction through landscape, keeping the weight and atmosphere of real terrain without naming it. His palette knife technique creates ridges and valleys that echo the Provençal hillsides.

Denis Ribas (born September 5, 1954, Provence, France) is a French contemporary landscape artist who has devoted his career to painting the countryside of southern France. He works exclusively as a plein air painter, painting outdoors before the motif, capturing the specific light, colour, and atmosphere of Provence.

His subjects are drawn from the landscape that surrounds him: sunlit fields, weathered farmhouses, ancient olive groves, and wild mountain flowers. His canvases carry the warmth and saturated colour of the Mediterranean — golden ochres of summer earth, silver-green of olive leaves against blue sky, and the deep violet shadows of Provençal buildings in late afternoon. Representative works include 'Nothing but Sunflowers,' 'Cottage in the Evening Light,' 'Path to Home' (all 2021), 'Little House, Farmer and Cherry Tree,' and 'The Mountain of Baux de Provence.'

Ribas's body of work represents a lifetime commitment to observing one beloved region across all its seasonal moods — from snowfall at Eze to the relentless summer heat of the Baux mountains.
