Artist introduction

Huang Hai (b. 1972) is a Fujian-born Chinese oil painter whose practice is rooted in realist plein-air painting. He studied oil painting at the Art College of Xiamen University, later continued advanced study at the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University in 2011, and pursued further training in the mural-painting program and advanced courses of the Central Academy of Fine Arts from 2012 to 2013.

His best-known subjects are coastal harbours, fishing boats, sea bays, and the fishing villages of Fujian, including areas such as Xiapu, Meizhou Island, and southern Fujian. At the same time, his practice also includes northern rural landscapes, the Great Wall, grassland subjects, and realist figure portraiture. His painting language is grounded in outdoor observation, with loose but substantial brushwork, soft chromatic layering, and close attention to light, weather, and material texture.

Huang Hai has been associated with several professional art organizations and plein-air painting circles in China. His works have appeared in national plein-air oil painting exhibitions, international invitational exhibitions in the United States, art fairs, and publications, and have entered institutional and private collections.
