Painting analysis

The painting opens close to the reeds. A quiet band of water sits near the center, reflecting the pale grey sky, while thick banks of vegetation press in from both sides. Brown, green, ochre, and orange passages build the feeling of late-season growth: reeds, shrubs, and low trees crowded together along the edge of the lake. The horizontal water gives the eye a place to rest, but the surrounding banks keep the scene dense, earthy, and alive.

Shi Fei's technique makes the landscape feel physically marshy. Loaded strokes and knife-like ridges gather in the reeds and trees, so the surface carries the weight of branches, mud, and dry autumn plants. The water is smoother and flatter, a held breath between heavier textures, and that contrast gives the composition its rhythm. The grey-white sky lowers the temperature of the whole scene, allowing the warm vegetation to glow without becoming decorative.

Baiyangdian is more than a lake subject. As one of northern China's important wetland landscapes, it carries memories of water, reeds, fishing life, and wartime resistance associated with local waterborne guerrilla stories, while today it is also tied to the ecological identity of Xiong'an.
