Art appreciation

The central waterway provides the principal route through the composition. It is widest close to the lower edge and contracts after passing the dark projections of each bank. A raised right bank and dark growth form the heaviest zone; lower ground on the left slopes towards the water. Fine upright strokes in the middle distance suggest reeds or waterside plants. The large pale sky balances the density below. No clear figure is shown, but the channel itself identifies the wetland as traversable terrain and draws the eye beyond the foreground.

Dark grey, brown-black, ochre, dusty pink and small areas of yellow-green are repeatedly layered and scraped across the banks. Knife marks expose lower colour and produce the coarse surface of soil and dry vegetation. The water is flatter and paler, with grey-white and cool green interrupted by dark strokes at the edges so that reflected light remains concentrated. Cream, pale violet and blue-grey lie more thinly in the sky. Changes in paint thickness give air, water and ground separate material characters.

Shi spends a substantial part of each year travelling and painting outdoors. That practice requires him to establish shore, water and sky quickly before selecting the necessary detail. He does not describe every reed or turn Baiyangdian into a landmark panorama. Instead, the navigable channel remains legible while wet reflection and resistant banks receive different handling. The balance follows his movement from classical realism towards larger, more immediate brushwork shaped by direct observation.

Style and context

Baiyangdian is a Hebei wetland made up of waterways, shallow water and reed country. Painting such a place requires attention to reflection, the turns of the shore and changes in vegetation as much as to a distant outline. Baiyangdian Series, Hebei begins with a narrow channel and retains a specific sense of wetland terrain. Loose handling does not make it an abstract painting.

Modern Chinese landscape oil painting brought academic spatial construction into contact with Impressionist observation of changing light. Shi adds forceful impasto and scraping to that foundation. Smooth water receives the sky, while heavy banks resist it. The method clarifies a difference already present in the landscape, linking the title, the composition and the physical surface.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Shi Fei was born in 1967 in the Greater Khingan Range, Heilongjiang, and is now based in Shenzhen, where he serves on the council of the Shenzhen Artists Association. His practice is grounded in realist construction and ranges from plein-air landscape and wetlands to studio still life.

Growing up in northeast China acquainted him with pronounced seasonal change. Years of travelling and painting outdoors extended that observation across different terrain and weather. Spending substantial periods each year in the field gradually raised the key of his palette and moved his brushwork from complete modelling towards quicker blocks of colour and loaded strokes.

His subjects include the Baiyangdian wetlands in Hebei as well as flowers, fruit and everyday vessels. Whether working from a distant landscape or objects on a table, he first establishes volume and tonal order, then preserves the speed of direct observation so that academic realism and immediate handling remain visible together.
