Art appreciation

The left slope occupies almost a third of the canvas, creating an unequal balance with the more open ground at right. A diagonal rising from the lower centre provides the main axis, crossing several horizontal ledges before reaching the ridge. Pale buildings form a narrow band above, with a dark green tree and an upright grey-white structure supplying scale. No traveller is visible. The terrain itself links the near foreground to the settlement, while its breaks and height keep the houses clearly remote.

Ochre, earth yellow, brown-grey and black are repeatedly dragged and scraped across the hillside. Long diagonal strokes follow the ascent and short horizontal ones mark its levels. Thick paint gathers along rough edges, while pale underlayers flash through incisions. The buildings contract into closely set cream, pale yellow and mauve blocks. Cobalt, blue-grey and white turn more freely through the distant mountains and sky. A thick-to-thin change of surface allows light to fall unevenly over the specific terrain.

Chen’s work attends to local life, old urban fabric and regional memory. His experience with freehand ink encourages him to select the few directional marks needed to establish a place. The oil painting applies the same economy: several scraped strokes raise the hillside and small light blocks locate the distant houses. By looking towards the settlement across broken ground, he gives “memory” a visible basis in distance, obstruction and intermittent clarity.

Style and context

Twentieth-century Chinese regional landscape painting often combined observed structure with freehand selection, retaining the main terrain while omitting secondary detail. In Memories in Light, the broken slopes, ridge settlement and distant mountains remain recognisable, while dense scraping turns the ground into a layered surface.

The settlement occupies only a narrow band, whereas the foreground terrain advances through darker, rougher paint. Light picks out the houses on the ridge, and blue-grey sky and mountains recede behind them. Chen Lijia’s experience with regional subjects and freehand ink appears in the pale ridge settlement, scraped foreground and bands of light that separate land from distance.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Chen Lijia is a painter from Jieyang, Guangdong, and a member of the Jieyang Artists Association. He is active within the Chaoshan regional art community, with a practice rooted in close observation of local life and cultural atmosphere. His work includes freehand ink painting and oil.

His subjects include scenes of Jieyang old city, everyday market life, playful cats, expressive figures, lychees, clay teapots, and Chaoshan vernacular architecture. Across these subjects, he uses concise ink and colour to record local people, objects and architecture.

In June 2026, Chen participated in the 40th edition of the Hand-in-Hand Art Journey: Master Recommendation Series Exhibition organized by the Jieyang Artists Association. His oil painting practice represents another side of his work, translating attention to light, atmosphere, and regional memory into a Western medium.
