Painting analysis

A river bends through the foreground, its surface catching the pale sky in broken reflections. Trees line both banks — bare branches in the near ground, denser foliage further back — their forms mirrored in the still water. The palette stays within a narrow tonal range: blue-grey sky, green-grey water, warm earth along the banks, and scattered touches of ochre in the winter vegetation. The light is soft, diffused, without sharp shadows. Everything feels held in a quiet pause, as if the season itself has slowed the landscape down.

The painting's strength comes from its restrained handling. Brushwork is loose but disciplined — reflections are suggested with horizontal strokes, tree branches with quick vertical marks, the bank with warm earth passages that anchor the composition. Artist Profile

Artist introduction

Chen Xuefeng was born in Hunan in 1980 and now lives in Shenzhen. He is a young oil painter, senior advertising designer, member of the Shenzhen Artists Association, and member of the Futian District Artists Association. In 2000, he entered the School of Art at Central South University.

He once taught at Shenzhen Second Senior Technical School, and in 2009 established his own art space to focus on oil painting. His subjects include hometown landscapes, rustic old houses, floral still lifes, and Lingnan Hakka village scenes. His work is known for distilled composition, restrained natural colour, attention to light atmosphere, and poetic expression.

In 2003, during his university years, he held a solo Chinese painting exhibition, with nearly forty works entering collections. In 2024, he held the solo oil painting exhibition Homecoming at Shenzhen Red Cube Public Art Museum, presenting more than forty works. His representative works include Dusk Stillness, Hakka Walled Village Series, River of Homeland, and Lotus Series.
