Painting analysis

Huangshui Town No. 9 feels like a street caught at its most awake. Red walls, yellow shopfronts, blue roofs, and green shadows press toward a curving road, while small figures move through the lower edge as if the market has just begun to fill with sound. The perspective bends slightly, not to confuse the scene, but to make the town feel close, warm, and lived in.

Zhang Jiyu lets colour carry the rhythm of daily life. Thick brushwork pushes the buildings forward in blocks of heat and light, while darker lines keep the roofs, windows, and road from dissolving into pure colour. The paint does not smooth the town into a postcard view; it keeps the roughness of walls, signs, awnings, and passing bodies, so the street feels remembered through movement rather than measured by architecture.

The painting sits naturally beside Fauvist townscapes by Maurice de Vlaminck, where streets become emotional structures instead of neutral views. Yet Zhang's image is less wild than rooted: the colour is bright, but the road still leads inward, and the figures keep the scene tied to ordinary life. Huangshui Town No. 9 belongs to the modern tradition of expressive colour townscape, where architecture remains recognizable but colour and deformation carry the emotional structure. Zhang Jiyu's training in oil painting and his long engagement with Chinese freehand aesthetics give the work a double footing: Western chromatic freedom on one side, calligraphic movement and mood-led composition on the other.

The closest international parallel is Ernst Ludwig Kirchner rather than a documentary urban painter. Like Kirchner's charged street scenes, Zhang's town uses compressed perspective and angled structure to make built space feel psychologically alive. The difference is that Zhang's image keeps a Chinese sense of pictorial breathing, allowing strong colour to serve memory and atmosphere rather than urban anxiety.

Artist introduction

Zhang Jiyu was born in June 1958 in Yibin, Sichuan, and now lives in Chongqing. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Southwest Normal University, now Southwest University, in 1986. He is a Level 3 Professor and graduate supervisor at the School of Art, Chongqing Technology and Business University, and has also served as vice dean, academic committee member, and discipline leader.

His painting practice brings together Impressionist methods of light and colour, Expressionist brushwork, and the freehand spirit of Chinese ink painting. Rather than treating landscape as fixed scenery, Zhang often builds images through mood, written movement, and saturated but controlled colour. His subjects range from natural landscape and regional life to flowers and still life, forming an oil-painting language that connects Western technique with Chinese pictorial atmosphere.

Zhang's professional roles include vice chairman of the Chongqing Oil Painting Society, vice president of the Chengdu Modern Landscape Oil Painting Academy, member of the Chinese Oil Painting Society, and senior expert of the China Digital Art Design Committee. He has held twelve solo oil-painting exhibitions in mainland China and abroad, with more than two hundred works selected for provincial and national exhibitions. He has published seven monographs and teaching books; Design Color has been adopted by more than three hundred universities and received a first-class university press award.
