Art appreciation

Buildings converge from both sides, and their irregular rooflines gather around the central yellow block. The road opens at the lower edge and narrows between figures and corners. Dark upright poles cross walls and sky on the right, countering the curved roofs. Larger figures occupy the near street and smaller ones approach the doorways. Those changes in position and scale establish depth and show residents walking, pausing or meeting within the built space.

Ochre, earth brown, grey-white and small passages of dark red lie thickly across the façades. Brushstrokes turn around corners and arches, giving the walls an uneven physical surface. Violet-black, deep brown and blue-grey describe the roofs; wires and lamps pass through them in harder lines. Pale blue, lilac and pink-grey move more thinly through the sky and continue around the roof edges. Perspective is deliberately flexible, strengthening the street’s compression and vertical rise.

Zhang lives and teaches in Chongqing and has long painted both natural scenery and regional life. He brings Impressionist colour, expressionist handling and the directional movement of Chinese freehand painting into one system. At Huangshui Town he retains the street’s framework while loosening wall and roof shapes. The pedestrians are too small to become portraits, yet their positions prevent the buildings from becoming empty shells. Lived structure and immediate brushwork remain equally necessary.

Style and context

Twentieth-century townscape increasingly moved away from exact architectural record towards the experience of moving through a street. Impressionism addressed changing colour; expressionism allowed perspective and proportion to respond to pressure or energy; Chinese freehand practice offered another way to abbreviate building, tree and road through directed marks. Huangshui Town No. 9 keeps an enterable street and legible inhabitants while letting thick turning strokes carry its visual force.

“No. 9” identifies the work as part of sustained observation of one place. A series gains value by reconsidering street opening, roofline, people and weather on each occasion. Zhang’s long work in colour and composition is evident in the order produced by the central yellow building, cooler sky and black linear poles.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Zhang Jiyu was born in June 1958 in Yibin, Sichuan, and now lives in Chongqing. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Southwest Normal University, now Southwest University, in 1986. He is a Level 3 Professor and graduate supervisor at the School of Art, Chongqing Technology and Business University, and has also served as vice dean, academic committee member, and discipline leader.

His painting practice brings together Impressionist methods of light and colour, Expressionist brushwork, and the freehand spirit of Chinese ink painting. Rather than treating landscape as fixed scenery, Zhang often builds images through mood, directional brushwork, and saturated but controlled colour. His subjects range from natural landscape and regional life to flowers and still life, forming an oil-painting language that connects Western technique with Chinese pictorial atmosphere.

Zhang's professional roles include vice chairman of the Chongqing Oil Painting Society, vice president of the Chengdu Modern Landscape Oil Painting Academy, member of the Chinese Oil Painting Society, and senior expert of the China Digital Art Design Committee. He has held twelve solo oil-painting exhibitions in mainland China and abroad, with more than two hundred works selected for provincial and national exhibitions. He has published seven monographs and teaching books; Design Color has been adopted by more than three hundred universities and received a first-class university press award.
