Art appreciation

A dark vase stands at the centre above a low horizontal table edge. The bouquet opens upward, with several light roses concentrated through the middle and right and darker flowers closing around them. Few secondary objects interrupt the image. The blue field allows the height, tilt, and degree of opening of each bloom to become the structure of the composition.

Yang builds the surface with thick strokes, circular movements, and occasional scraping. White, ice blue, and pale violet turn around the lighter roses; ultramarine, indigo, and violet-black accumulate in the darker blooms and leaves. The background preserves horizontal and arcing brush marks. At times the vase edge is firm; elsewhere it merges with the table. Scattered gold touches work like brief accents within the cool field.

This remains a recognisable still life, but colour and paint are as active as the flowers themselves. Across Yang's landscapes and night subjects, dense dark layers often provide a ground from which light is drawn. Blue Dream brings that procedure indoors. Deep blue establishes the atmosphere first, and the pale flowers are gradually lifted from it, making the familiar bouquet seem near in texture and uncertain in space.

Style and context

A restricted palette has long allowed modern still-life painters to test how value, temperature, and texture can distinguish objects when local colour is withheld. In Blue Dream, blue unifies the vase, bouquet, table, and background, while small shifts in lightness and handling preserve their separate forms. The painting is therefore neither flat pattern nor conventional botanical description.

Yang Fuxu's practice combines recognisable subjects rooted in ordinary life with formal experiment. He chooses the familiar structure of a vase and flowers, then adjusts the eye through ultramarine, indigo, ice blue, and sparing gold. Floral form gives the paint something to inhabit, while material movement prevents the bouquet from becoming static. Their exchange accounts for the dreamlike quality of the work.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yang Fuxu (born 1980) graduated from the Guangxi Academy of Arts and later undertook advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and through a China Federation of Literary and Art Circles programme for emerging cultural practitioners. He is a member of the China Artists Association. This training supports both his academic command of form and his continued experiments with material and composition.

His practice includes the Homeland, Duilianggou, Dancer and Brilliant Night series. Homeland and Duilianggou use close views of rural ground; Dancer builds rhythms resembling bodily movement through leaning, crossing and extended trunks; Brilliant Night places artificial light within dense dark layers.

His exhibition record includes Fengyu Southwest in 2013, a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme in 2019 and selection for the national Era, Portrait exhibition in 2023. Across these series, recognisable landscape forms increasingly give way to thick paint, broad colour fields and rhythmic structure.
