Blue Dream

White and pale yellow flowers rise from a dark ceramic jar against a field of deep indigo. The canvas is small — 50 by 60 centimeters, oil on canvas — but the paint sits heavy on the surface, each flower built from strokes thick enough to cast their own small shadows. The jar anchors the lower third, its rim catching the only warm note in the frame — a thin band of burnt sienna that keeps the composition from sliding entirely into cold. Above it, white petals push forward while the background recedes in layers of cobalt and navy, the distinction between flower and field less a hard boundary than a slow dissolve.

The blue here doesn't describe night so much as deep water — the color one senses when one looks down into it, not the surface. Still life has always been the genre closest to silence. The Flemish masters painted flowers that held the pressure of vanitas, beauty caught one breath before it fades. Yang Fuxu's flowers carry a different kind of gravity — not the anxiety of time passing, but the insistence of a single color refusing to let go. The paint rewards patience: each visit reveals a passage missed before, a violet shadow beneath a petal, a scraped patch of raw canvas visible near the jar's base.
