White Steed in the Wind is an exacting close-up of the horse's head, neck, and shoulder. The animal fills the picture with a quiet, muscular presence. Wind is felt through the lifted mane, the taut turn of the head, and the alertness held around the eye and muzzle. By bringing the viewer so near, Li Yadong makes the horse less a symbol of speed than a living creature of concentration and force.

The refinement of the painting lies in the way the white coat is handled. Small tonal shifts describe the bridge of the nose, the cheek, the curve of the neck, and the broad shoulder without hardening them into illustration. Cool shadows and warmer light pass across the surface like breath moving over bone and muscle. Every passage asks for slow looking: the edge of the ear, the pressure of the jaw, the fall of the mane, and the weight gathered at the shoulder.

Artist introduction

Li Yadong, born in 1954 in Siping, Jilin, is a contemporary Chinese oil painter shaped by northeastern academic training and later study at the Repin Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg under Professor Alexander Bestrov. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Northeast Normal University and has long been associated with the Siping art community, serving as chairman of the Siping Oil Painting Society and as a council member of the local artists association.

His practice centers on figurative painting, horses, and landscape subjects, combining disciplined anatomical structure with a lyrical sense of outdoor light. Russian academic realism appears in his attention to drawing, proportion, and spatial atmosphere, while his mature works soften that structure through poetic color and contemplative natural settings. His works have appeared in regional exhibitions and in historical-theme art events, and have entered private and gallery collections in Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, and other places.
