Art appreciation

The horizontal format places the woman in the right third and leaves most of the left side to the window and empty bed. Her shoulders draw slightly forward and her hands rest near her lap, while the white cat sits upright beside her. The cat’s head is near the central axis and forms a diagonal connection with the woman’s higher face. Bedding extends from their feet into the left foreground, bringing the viewer close to the room.

Cream, pale yellow, misted grey and light brown control the palette. Water vapour nearly erases the view beyond the window, leaving vertical frames and low-contrast traces. Smaller tonal shifts separate the woman’s skin, her clothing and the cat’s coat. Thicker white catches the neckline and sleeve folds, short dense strokes describe fur, and longer flat marks spread across the sheet. Diffuse light unifies the scene while preserving these material differences.

Li Yadong received rigorous training in drawing and oil painting, and his subjects have long included people, animals and landscapes. In Drizzle, those strands meet within one interior: figure construction remains exact, the cat has an independent gaze, and the weather beyond the glass governs the colour. Li chooses posture, proximity and scattered light in place of a stated event, consistent with the quieter lyrical direction of his mature work.

Style and context

Interior figure painting examines more than likeness. It can study how a person shares space with a room, window light and the other living beings of daily life. Since the nineteenth century, painters have used windows to divide near and far and furniture to locate the viewer within an intimate setting. When an animal enters the image, its own attention and bodily response add another exchange.

The narrative of Drizzle rests on such observable relations. The woman glances to one side and the cat looks outward; their bodies are close although their attention separates. Misted glass keeps the exterior remote and brings pale weather-filtered light into the room. The title thus corresponds to both the weather and the conditions of seeing. With no stated identity or event, the quiet tone is produced by pose, rain-covered glass and a restricted palette.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Yadong, born in 1954 in Siping, Jilin, graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Northeast Normal University. He later studied drawing and oil painting at the Repin Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg under Professor Alexander Bestrov.

Li has long worked within the Siping art community, serving as chairman of the Siping Oil Painting Society and as a council member of the local artists association. His subjects include figures, horses and landscapes. His academic training is visible in the close attention he gives to anatomy, proportion and the placement of bodies within outdoor space.

The Russian realist method strengthened his use of drawing and tonal modelling. In later work, he retained that structure while loosening the handling of sky, vegetation and reflected light, allowing animals and figures to remain solid within changing weather and open terrain.
