Art appreciation

The horizon lies below the midpoint and gives nearly half the canvas to the sky. The central trees form the deepest mass, linked to smaller growth at either side and to the ridge behind. Several diagonal and horizontal bands of field narrow towards the middle. Broken foreground marks, openings in the central trees, the low ridge and the broad cloud field establish successive depths without a dominant building or figure.

Yellow-green, olive, earth yellow and small amounts of violet-blue describe the front in short strokes, scrapes and loaded touches. Dense dark green and blue-black build the trees, with fine light marks indicating foliage in illumination. The distant ridge becomes a flatter violet-blue band. Above, broader grey-white and cream-yellow planes overlap. Brushwork changes from broken marks to compressed strip and open cloud shapes as distance increases.

Four decades of realist landscape and plein-air practice have trained Liu to select large forms and tonal relations quickly on site. Boshan Chishang Sketch describes fields through active foreground paint, a dark centre and cool distance rather than separate botanical detail. Sky and land receive comparable weight because cloud colour and reflection across the fields determine the observed light together.

Style and context

Chishang lies in the southern mountain area of Boshan, Zibo, near the upper Zi River and the Lushan landscape. Boshan Chishang Sketch selects fields, a belt of trees, a low ridge and moving cloud. With no dominant building or figure, the work gives the area an open and gently receding breadth.

Modern observational landscape keeps divided colour and field marks within a legible spatial structure. Near ground, trees, ridge and sky maintain depth here, while each receives different handling. The large sky is active: cloud colour answers the yellow-green fields below, and the dark trees hold them together. The work records Chishang terrain through one particular condition of outdoor light.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
