Art appreciation

Sky, distant field, middle scrub and near water form four horizontal zones, interrupted by the curve of the river. The tallest trees rise near the centre, while the group at right approaches the distant light and varies the spacing. No road or figure appears, yet the eye can follow the water and tree line. Low terrain stretches the view laterally, and the trees become the main measures of distance and wind.

Broad cobalt, grey-violet and pale-yellow strokes move across the sky, leaving parts of the underlayer visible. Smoother blue-grey on the river repeats the colour above. Greens, browns and pink ochres are scraped into irregular patches along the banks, and narrow dark strokes lift the trunks. Texture is heavier near the foreground and grows thinner and lighter across the fields. These changes establish atmospheric distance without enumerating individual plants.

Yang’s Home and Duilianggou series examine rural surfaces, while his Dancer series treats trees as forms capable of posture and memory. The tall trees here remain observed natural features, but each has a particular lean, grouping and stance. Set against broad horizontal land, their verticals steady river and sky. Long familiarity with home landscapes helps explain why trees repeatedly give his compositions their character.

Style and context

Panoramic landscape often uses a low horizon and horizontal divisions to describe plains, waterways and broad sky. Impressionist practice made weather and momentary colour active parts of composition, while Chinese rural landscape retained banks, fields and tree rows as lived surroundings. Landscape unifies the view through blue-violet air and calibrates depth with the river bend and vertical trees.

Yang trained at the Guangxi Arts University and later at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Academic composition keeps the four zones ordered, while sustained attention to rural subjects gives an ordinary riverbank enough substance for repeated study. Traces of land use, vegetation and changing sky provide the content without a staged incident. The landscape remains specific even without a named location.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yang Fuxu (born 1980) graduated from the Guangxi Academy of Arts and later undertook advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and through a China Federation of Literary and Art Circles programme for emerging cultural practitioners. He is a member of the China Artists Association. This training supports both his academic command of form and his continued experiments with material and composition.

His practice includes the Homeland, Duilianggou, Dancer and Brilliant Night series. Homeland and Duilianggou use close views of rural ground; Dancer builds rhythms resembling bodily movement through leaning, crossing and extended trunks; Brilliant Night places artificial light within dense dark layers.

His exhibition record includes Fengyu Southwest in 2013, a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme in 2019 and selection for the national Era, Portrait exhibition in 2023. Across these series, recognisable landscape forms increasingly give way to thick paint, broad colour fields and rhythmic structure.
