Art appreciation

The opposing walls close towards a deep narrow opening, with the darkest passage left of centre. The river turns out of the gorge, passes the two pale roofs and opens towards the lower right. Golden trees line both sides, taller near the viewer and progressively smaller in depth. The cliffs dominate by area, while the small forms beside the river provide a distinct foothold and retain the relation between people and environment.

Loaded, knife-like strokes layer ochre-brown, deep green, grey-violet and off-white along the rock faces. Light colour catches projecting ridges and black settles in recesses. Upright golden marks gather into trees and cross the diagonal geology. Cold white and pale grey build the river more thickly; dark banks interrupt its edges and give the current changes of direction.

Li repeatedly paints natural scenery, historic villages and rural places from direct observation. He leaves the precise purpose of the small shelters open; their role is to show occupation on the valley floor. Thin distant greys and open sky contrast with the greater weight of the nearer rock and bank. The river joins these different surfaces within one path of looking.

Style and context

Modern Chinese landscape sketching absorbed Western perspective and observed colour while retaining the older landscape tradition of entering mountains along a stream. The river in Landscape Series serves both purposes: it narrows with distance and guides the eye through overlapping cliffs. Trees and shelters on the valley floor keep habitation and travel within the scene.

Li has taken part in repeated regional and village sketching projects. Faced with the canyon, he establishes the hierarchy of terrain before varying the thickness of paint across rock, water and trees. Accurate observation and material distinction support each other, giving the geological setting a credible lived dimension. The human details prevent the canyon from becoming a detached spectacle in isolation.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Shuijin, born in 1978 in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, is a professional watercolor painter based in Shenzhen, where he has long worked in Dafen Oil Painting Village. His practice centers on watercolor and oil pastel on paper, with subjects drawn from natural scenery, village architecture, and rural life. His style combines realist observation with an Impressionist sensitivity to light and atmosphere.

In August 2016, Li participated in the Songyang, Zhejiang watercolor plein-air programme, with several works included in the published 2016 Songyang Watercolor Sketching Album. In April 2026, he joined Zou Yuan and Wu Liyun in a Three-Person Watercolor Joint Exhibition, formally recorded by Artron.

Representative works include Enjoying the Sunshine, a 2008 watercolor, and Miao Village Scenery, a 2015 watercolor on paper. These activities trace the development of a practice sustained through plein-air study and work on paper.
