Painting analysis

A low strip of bare trees and village roofs anchors the bottom of the canvas, while the world behind it opens into pale water, distant hills, and a sky that seems almost absorbed by the lake. The scene is horizontal and quiet, but not empty. The dark trunks and rooflines give the foreground a crisp rhythm, and the soft blue-green water carries the eye toward the layered mountains at the back.

What makes the painting distinctive is how Li Shuijin treats oil as if it could remember watercolor. The paint is thin and transparent in the sky and water, allowing the pale ground to shine through, while the trees and rooftops are drawn with drier, sharper marks. Instead of heavy oil-painting weight, the surface keeps a light breath; colour gathers in pools, then thins out again, like mist settling over a village after rain.

Artist introduction

Li Shuijin, born in 1978 in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, is a professional watercolor painter based in Shenzhen, where he has long worked in Dafen Oil Painting Village. His practice centers on watercolor and oil pastel on paper, with subjects drawn from natural scenery, village architecture, and rural life. His style combines realist observation with an Impressionist sensitivity to light and atmosphere.

In August 2016, Li participated in the Songyang, Zhejiang watercolor plein-air programme, with several works included in the published 2016 Songyang Watercolor Sketching Album. In April 2026, he joined Zou Yuan and Wu Liyun in a Three-Person Watercolor Joint Exhibition, formally recorded by Artron. Representative works include Enjoying the Sunshine, a 2008 watercolor measuring 62 × 46 cm, and Miao Village Scenery, a 2015 watercolor on paper measuring 78 × 54 cm. His market presence is rooted mainly in Shenzhen's local art scene and the Dafen collector community.
