Art appreciation

The image rises through several uneven colour bands. Golden foreground terrain fills nearly half the canvas and is cut by near-black green growth. A bright green middle slope moves towards the upper right, and continuous blue peaks close the horizon. A pale diagonal break separates two middle slopes. Their overlap, the smaller marks beyond and the continuous blue ridge establish depth, while crossed grasses at the bottom define the near edge of the field.

Paint is handled directly. Yellow and yellow-green are spread in broad passages, deep green-black strokes press across them, and pale grey and fresh green enter the blue ridges. A hard tool or brush handle scratches long grasses through dark layers to reveal brighter colour beneath. White spatters and thin drips scatter across the front. Broad planes, incised lines and airborne droplets describe the density of growth and retain the speed of work outdoors.

Liu Ping has maintained a long practice of plein-air painting across China and Europe. His training values realist structure, while his mature landscapes retain substantial colour and the movement of on-site marks. In Landscape Sketch, location is left unspecified and spatial work is carried by slope turns, vegetation bands and cool ridges. The scratches and spatters record the direction, concentration and light of nearby grass, linking his method directly to observed terrain.

Style and context

During the nineteenth century, plein-air studies increasingly became finished works, retaining colour and decisions made under changing light. Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscape strengthened the structural role of colour, allowing slopes, trees and sky to be organised through directional planes. Landscape Sketch follows this route, moving recognisable topography towards a freer treatment of material.

The painting approaches abstraction while remaining a legible mountain landscape. Near slope, middle vegetation, distant ridges and sky maintain continuous depth, and scratched lines correspond to the growth of grass. Active handling does not remove the observed subject; it records the act of looking and painting. Liu controls the large structure through colour bands and uses lines and spatters for local variation, allowing the immediacy of fieldwork and a resolved composition to coexist.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
