Painting analysis

The hillside begins close to the viewer, with yellow-green scrub and ochre earth climbing diagonally across the square canvas. Beyond it, the mountains do not sit as a single backdrop; they recede in layered blue-grey planes, each ridge softer than the one before it. That quiet stacking of slope, tree mass, and distant mountain gives the small painting a surprising depth, as if the autumn air were opening one level of land after another.

Liu Ping keeps the surface alive without making it fussy. Dry, quick strokes catch on the grasses in the foreground, while broader earth-coloured passages settle into the middle slope. The darker trees act like pauses in the composition, and the far ridges are handled with cooler, thinner paint, letting the mountain layers fade rather than shout. The result feels like a real outdoor moment: brief, slightly cool, and held together by the painter's sure sense of weight.

What stays with you is not a dramatic view, but the feeling of having paused on a hillside long enough for the distance to reveal itself. In that sense, the painting has the intimacy of Camille Corot's smaller landscape studies, where a tree line, a slope, and a few bands of air can hold a whole season. This painting sits within Liu Ping's plein-air realist practice, but its strength is not simply that it was observed outdoors. The square format makes the hillside feel compact, while the layered ridges behind it give the sketch a deeper spatial rhythm. It belongs to a northern Chinese landscape tradition in which land is not decorative scenery, but something felt through weight, season, and distance.

Seen internationally, the work can be placed beside Cézanne's outdoor studies, not because Liu borrows his structure directly, but because both artists let slopes, planes, and colour relationships build the landscape from within. Liu's language is quieter and more observational. The painting keeps the looseness of a field sketch, yet the mountain layers and hillside masses are organized enough to make the small scene feel complete.

Artist Profile

Artist introduction

Liu Ping was born in 1953 in Zibo, Shandong province, and now resides in Beijing with over forty years devoted to oil painting creation and research. He holds the title of Associate Research Curator and is a founding member of the Zibo Oil Painting and Mural Art Research Society. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School (now Shandong University of Arts) from 1976, later completing the graduate programme in oil painting creation at Renmin University of China’s School of Art.

His practice centres on realist landscape painting with rigorous form and rich, substantial colour. He has maintained a decades-long commitment to plein-air work, painting across China’s mountains and rivers as well as multiple European locations, achieving works that combine the freshness of on-site observation with the completeness of studio composition. He currently serves as president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum, and senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. His memberships include the Chinese Oil Painting Society, Shandong Provincial Artists Association, standing director of the France-China Artists Association, and consultant to the Italian Cultural Development Association.

He has held multiple solo and group exhibitions in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan, and Zibo, with works broadly collected by domestic and international art institutions and private collectors.
