Art appreciation

Water enters from the lower right and centre, divides around several low rocks, then bends left before disappearing between the banks. The warm exposed slope marks the turn. Dense woodland advances from both sides, leaving only a pale opening at the upper left. The vertical format makes the stream feel narrow and extended: the viewer first meets stone and current, then follows the bend into the trees.

Grey-white, blue-grey and olive marks lengthen into moving water, with dark brown intervals indicating submerged stone and changes of direction. Peach, charcoal, cream and touches of blue build the foreground rocks in thick angular patches. Broad dark greens compress the woodland; fine pale trunks then break its surface. The diagonal current and the upright trees set two distinct rhythms against one another.

Chang Baoan has spent decades painting the land, weather and seasons of northeast China through expressive realism. A close study of one riverbank suits that practice. He gives the near stones weight, keeps the stream quick and lets the forest press down from above. The scene carries the directness of field observation, with soil, water and vegetation differentiated through the handling of paint.

Theme

Style and context

The Barbizon painters of nineteenth-century France established woodland, streams and ordinary rural terrain as complete subjects. Their commitment to direct observation helped move landscape away from idealised scenery and encouraged painters to retain the freshness of outdoor studies in finished work.

Linjiang Sketch continues that plein-air and expressive-realist line. The geography remains credible, but the paint is never hidden: long water marks, thick stone and a dense field of green describe three different materials. Chang Baoan uses those differences to make the stream’s speed, the rocks’ resistance and the forest’s depth immediately legible within a compact vertical view.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Chang Baoan, born in 1953 in Siping, Jilin province, began his artistic career in 1971 in the art division of the Siping Cultural Center. In 1982 he transferred to the Siping Industry and Commerce Bureau, while continuing to paint. He is a member of the Siping Artists Association, vice chairman of the Siping Oil Painting Society, and a lifetime specially appointed painter of the China Contemporary Oil Painting Academy.

His central subject is the black-earth countryside of northeast China: rural houses, haystacks, frozen fields, lotus ponds and the changing seasons of the northern plains. Long familiarity with local land and weather led him from an initially descriptive realism towards thicker paint and more concentrated surfaces, which he uses to record worn structures, cultivated ground and seasonal change.

Memory appeared in the 2011 First Siping Oil Painting Exhibition, and Threshing Ground in the 2014 Jilin Changbai Mountain Oil Painting Exhibition. Harvest joined the Ministry of Culture's Spring Rain Project national tour in 2014. Haystack 1 and Haystack 2 were shown in a 2016 National Art Fund exhibition at Beijing's Today Art Museum, and Autumn Charm appeared in the Siping Oil Painting Society's second exhibition in 2022.
