Painting analysis

MEMORIES 6 has a warmer, denser pressure than the cooler works in the series. Reds, burnt oranges, dark browns, and black move across the square canvas in heavy horizontal bands, like earth compressed by heat. The surface does not open into distance; it presses forward, making the painting feel close, physical, and almost mineral.

Fioroni's palette knife makes that compression visible. Paint is laid down, scraped back, and pushed again, leaving raised ridges where light catches and dark grooves where older layers remain. The warmth is not decorative: it comes from the way red and orange are trapped between rough edges, as if each band records a different layer of time under pressure.

The title MEMORIES works here less like nostalgia and more like accumulation. This painting shares something with Mark Rothko's ability to make horizontal colour fields feel emotional, but Fioroni's surface is more rugged and tactile, closer to a wall or a cross-section than a pure field of light. MEMORIES 6 sits within material abstraction, where surface is not a neutral support but the subject of the work. The horizontal bands suggest order, but their scraped edges, compressed colour, and uneven ridges keep that order from becoming clean or decorative. Fioroni's design background remains visible in the structure, while the physical paint resists becoming merely planned.

The closest art-historical parallel is Alberto Burri, who made damaged, burned, and stressed surfaces carry emotional force. Fioroni's version is less severe and more chromatic, but the lineage is useful: both artists treat texture as evidence, not finish. In MEMORIES 6, the layered surface becomes a record of pressure, revision, and time held inside the material itself.

Artist introduction

Emanuele Fioroni, known professionally as Lele Fioroni, was born in Milan in 1977. He studied computer science at the International University of Milan and later worked in web and 3D design, building a creative practice shaped by structure, interface, and visual communication. He first came to Shenzhen on business in 2009, settled there in 2014, and in 2018 committed fully to painting after years of working alongside design and music.

Fioroni is a cross-disciplinary artist, designer, vocalist, and guitarist, as well as the founder of Art View (Shenzhen) Art Co., Ltd. His work grows from the meeting point between Italian visual energy and the Chinese culture he has lived with in Shenzhen. Chinese characters, urban change, layered surfaces, and material contrast are central to his practice; he often breaks down strokes, blocks, and signs, then rebuilds them through colour, texture, and divided fields.

His materials have included acrylic, gold leaf, masking tape, keyboard parts, cables, and oil paint, depending on the project. This openness gives his work a distinctive position within Shenzhen's contemporary art scene: it carries the discipline of design, the rhythm of music, and the physical freedom of studio painting. Fioroni has presented solo exhibitions in Shenzhen, including Time Labyrinth in 2020 and The 'Art' of Chinese Characters in 2021, and has participated in local and international exchange exhibitions.
