Artwork Notes

Art appreciation

Red, orange and burgundy bands cross the square canvas in unequal rows. Some reach an edge; others stop beside a dark gap or overlap a neighbouring colour. Pink concentrates around the middle and lower right, while smaller white, yellow, blue and green marks punctuate the warm field. No strip forms a horizon, and the image remains fully abstract.

The bands are not mechanically uniform. Brush drag leaves ridges and diagonal scoring within several passages; scraped edges expose underlying colour, and short flecks break larger blocks. A smoother red strip may sit beside a heavily worked orange or black section. Bright fragments, cut edges and dark intervals repeatedly break the horizontal order and connect neighbouring levels across the square field.

Fioroni trained in computer science and worked in web and three-dimensional design before committing fully to painting. That background offers a concrete context for his modular arrangement of visual units, while his studio handling resists the precision of a screen: edges remain uneven and pigment records pressure and revision. In MEMORIES 6, repeated bands hold separate fragments together, while interruptions and revised surfaces make memory appear accumulated, partial and continually rearranged.

Theme

Style and context

Post-war abstraction established repetition, colour relationships and simple geometric units as sufficient foundations for a painting. Later artists often complicated that order through gesture, layered surfaces and irregular edges. MEMORIES 6 uses the horizontal strip as a recurring module, then alters it through interruption, overlap and changes in texture.

Fioroni’s experience in digital design helps explain the segmented organisation, and his work as a musician adds context for the repeated intervals. Segmented rows recall designed information, while repeated intervals introduce a musical cadence. Uneven edges, scraping and changes of pressure keep that order responsive to the physical behaviour of paint.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Emanuele Fioroni, known professionally as Lele Fioroni, was born in Milan in 1977. He studied computer science at the International University of Milan and later worked in web and 3D design, building a creative practice shaped by structure, interface, and visual communication. He first came to Shenzhen on business in 2009, settled there in 2014, and in 2018 committed fully to painting after years of working alongside design and music.

Fioroni is a cross-disciplinary artist, designer, vocalist, and guitarist, as well as the founder of Art View (Shenzhen) Art Co., Ltd. His work grows from the meeting point between Italian visual energy and the Chinese culture he has lived with in Shenzhen. Chinese characters, urban change, layered surfaces, and material contrast are central to his practice; he often breaks down strokes, blocks, and signs, then rebuilds them through colour, texture, and divided fields.

His materials have included acrylic, gold leaf, masking tape, keyboard parts, cables, and oil paint, depending on the project. This openness gives his work a distinctive position within Shenzhen's contemporary art scene: it carries the discipline of design, the rhythm of music, and the physical freedom of studio painting. Fioroni has presented solo exhibitions in Shenzhen, including Time Labyrinth in 2020 and The 'Art' of Chinese Characters in 2021, and has participated in local and international exchange exhibitions.
