Art appreciation

Horizontal bands fill almost the entire canvas, separated by black gaps. Narrow yellow, white and brown runs gather at the top; a broad lime band crosses much of the middle; ochre-orange and gold forms recur below. Small pieces of blue, violet and red sit between the main colours. Abrupt endings and slight misalignments interrupt the lateral bands and bind one level to the next.

The handling moves repeatedly between brushing and heavy deposit. Diagonal strokes remain visible inside the lime band, which breaks into drips and a rough lower edge. Orange masses rise into rounded ridges and circling marks. White is sometimes dry-brushed over black, allowing the ground to show through. The apparent order of the stripes is continually altered by surfaces that record separate acts of application, covering and removal.

Fioroni’s experience in computing, web and 3D design provides a basis for layers, modules and sequence; his work as a musician brings repetition, pause and beat into the same vocabulary. MEMORIES 8 translates both into hand painting. The bands establish an order that can be followed, while scraping and dripping prevent mechanical repetition. Memory is presented through the changing relation among stored fragments.

Theme

Style and context

Colour Field painting and Abstract Expressionism respectively expanded the role of large colour areas and physical mark-making during the mid-twentieth century. Later abstraction often combines the two, allowing clear divisions and material gestures to coexist. Repeated horizontal bands can also operate like musical phrases, establishing beats, pauses and variation.

MEMORIES 8 uses yellow-green and black as a strong framework, then introduces orange, white, brown and small cool accents. Fioroni joins sequential design with uneven paint, so that separate bands remain distinct while still acting as one continuous field. Its bright palette and crowded surface give this work an energetic, saturated character within the memory series.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Emanuele Fioroni, known professionally as Lele Fioroni, was born in Milan in 1977. He studied computer science at the International University of Milan and later worked in web and 3D design, building a creative practice shaped by structure, interface, and visual communication. He first came to Shenzhen on business in 2009, settled there in 2014, and in 2018 committed fully to painting after years of working alongside design and music.

Fioroni is a cross-disciplinary artist, designer, vocalist, and guitarist, as well as the founder of Art View (Shenzhen) Art Co., Ltd. His work grows from the meeting point between Italian visual energy and the Chinese culture he has lived with in Shenzhen. Chinese characters, urban change, layered surfaces, and material contrast are central to his practice; he often breaks down strokes, blocks, and signs, then rebuilds them through colour, texture, and divided fields.

His materials have included acrylic, gold leaf, masking tape, keyboard parts, cables, and oil paint, depending on the project. This openness gives his work a distinctive position within Shenzhen's contemporary art scene: it carries the discipline of design, the rhythm of music, and the physical freedom of studio painting. Fioroni has presented solo exhibitions in Shenzhen, including Time Labyrinth in 2020 and The 'Art' of Chinese Characters in 2021, and has participated in local and international exchange exhibitions.
