Artwork Notes

Art appreciation

Several large domed forms spread continuously across the upper half, with cream shapes of different sizes overlapping between the edges. Below, the composition becomes fractured: pale columns, blue-black blocks, dark-green slopes and small red marks crowd together. There is no horizon. Depth depends on overlap, scale and shifts between warm and cool colour. The whole can resemble a mountain range, while each part remains an independent shape.

Cream and yellow ochre are rubbed in thin veils and covered again, leaving the weave visible in places. Repeated softening lets light seem to diffuse around the domed edges. The lower layers are denser and darker: deep blue and black open narrow fissures from which pale columns rise. Small red strokes, violet shadows and cobalt marks puncture the subdued range. Soft volume above presses against the compact structures below, giving the abstract space weight and instability.

Han first established his reputation through large-scale figure compositions built on exact drawing, tonal modelling and compositional discipline. In his later movement towards pure form, those skills were transferred from people and stories to relationships between shapes. The domes, columns and dark gaps of Mind Mountains remain rigorously arranged. Its title offers an open point of entry: the domed and column-like forms rise, overlap and open into dark passages, although the image need not correspond to an actual landscape.

Theme

Style and context

Abstract painting releases colour, shape, surface and spatial relation from the task of description. For Chinese oil painters trained in the academy, abstraction can carry a long-developed sense of structure into non-representational painting. Mind Mountains retains suggestions of mountainous form, yet it is read chiefly through domed volumes, dark intervals and layered temperatures.

Han served as head of the oil painting department at the Fine Arts College of Shanghai University, and his career spans figure painting and later formal research. This work makes that development visible: overall control once applied to large figure groups now orders major masses and rhythm, while tonal modelling becomes a difference of weight between cream, ochre and blue-black. Abstraction allows composition and colour to operate independently while the idea of mountains holds the composition between dense mass and narrow openings.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Han Runsheng, born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, in 1934, was a Chinese oil painter and art educator who served as Director of the Oil Painting Department at the School of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. His teaching and studio practice were grounded in drawing, tonal modelling and compositional training.

His earlier work centred on figures and large thematic compositions, with close attention to the order among forms and the overall tonal structure. In later years he reduced narrative and identifiable imagery, redirecting the structural discipline of figure painting towards colour fields, contours, spatial intervals and the movement of paint.

This shift allowed his abstract works to retain a clear sense of weight, direction and depth. His career connects academic oil-painting training with a later investigation of pure form, in which colour relationships became subjects in their own right.
