Blue and green blocks establish a cool skeleton of slopes and tree lines; white passages settle over them like snow, mist, or accumulated time; yellow areas appear as a warmer light held inside the structure. The image tells its story through these visible parts — not through an invented journey or a named place. The narrative is the making of a mountain inside memory.

Forms are compressed rather than described in detail, so the landscape feels rebuilt from fragments: edge, ridge, tree mark, pale cover, and inner glow. The mountain's soul is not an abstract claim. It comes from the weight of the blue-green masses, the covering pressure of white, and the warmth that still pushes through the cold field. Layered brushwork gives the surface a tactile density — each colour carries physical as well as visual weight.

Cold colour gives the mountain gravity; yellow gives it preserved warmth; white gives it distance and time. Together they form a grounded narrative of nature returning through memory. Yang Fuxu, born 1980, draws on rural childhood experience and contemporary sensibility alike; this work, quieter and more abstract than his river or poplar paintings, compresses vertical energy into dense colour masses. Within Yang's broader practice, the series represents his most abstract engagement with landscape. His river and poplar works maintain horizontal calm; these mountain pieces compress vertical energy into dense colour masses. The shift reveals how the same artist can move between contemplative stillness and concentrated force depending on terrain and emotional register.

Artist Profile

Artist introduction

Yang Fuxu (b. 1980) trained at the Guangxi Academy of Arts before completing advanced studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles' programme for emerging cultural leaders. A member of the Chinese Artists Association, he is recognised among China's new literary and art community — a designation for artists outside the traditional state academy system who have achieved national prominence.

His exhibition record spans more than a decade: selections for the Fengyu Southwest exhibition (2013), a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme (2019), and inclusion in the national Era, Portrait exhibition (2023). His paintings are held in private collections across China.

His practice is organised around several thematic series — the Homeland and Duijiagou paintings explore rural earth through intimate close-up perspectives, the Dancer series anthropomorphises trees as carriers of childhood memory, and the Brilliant Night works carve luminous passages from dense layers of darkness. Across all series, his painting balances rootedness in Chinese soil with contemporary formal experimentation.
