Pine Talk No. 2 stretches like a wide field of sound rather than a conventional landscape. A deep cobalt-blue ground holds flashes of scarlet, pale violet-white, acidic green and gold, while threadlike botanical forms move across the surface like pine needles caught in wind. The painting does not describe a pine tree directly; it lets the idea of pine become rhythm, breath and scattered light within a horizontal space.

Yang Fuxu builds the work through tension between open color and restless marks. The blue field gives the composition depth and silence, while red and yellow-green passages strike through it with quick, almost musical energy. Gold elements appear less as decoration than as interruptions of light, catching the eye and then disappearing back into the darker ground. The painting feels alive because it never settles into one reading: branch, weather, sound and memory keep changing places.

As the second work in the Pine Talk group, this large-format canvas expands the theme from object to atmosphere. It belongs to Yang’s lyrical abstraction, where natural forms are not copied but translated into movement and color pressure. Pine Talk No. 2 carries the scale of a mural and the intimacy of a remembered grove: a conversation between blue space, vegetal line and the bright accents of living growth. Pine Talk No. 2 belongs to Yang Fuxu’s lyrical abstraction, a mode in which natural signs are retained as rhythm rather than description. The work is structured through a broad chromatic field: cobalt blue acts as the atmospheric ground, while red, green, white and gold marks generate movement across it. Its brushwork alternates between open color areas and linear botanical traces, placing the painting between abstraction and remembered landscape.

The closest context is the lineage of abstract expressionism and East Asian ink-inflected abstraction, where gesture, interval and empty space carry natural reference without literal depiction. Yang’s method is more color-saturated and decorative in surface than classical ink abstraction, yet it shares the same concern with breath and line. The result is a contemporary abstract landscape language in which pine is not illustrated, but transformed into cadence, texture and spatial vibration.

Artist Profile

Artist introduction

Yang Fuxu (b. 1980) trained at the Guangxi Academy of Arts before completing advanced studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles' programme for emerging cultural leaders. A member of the Chinese Artists Association, he is recognised among China's new literary and art community — a designation for artists outside the traditional state academy system who have achieved national prominence.

His exhibition record spans more than a decade: selections for the Fengyu Southwest exhibition (2013), a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme (2019), and inclusion in the national Era, Portrait exhibition (2023). His paintings are held in private collections across China.

His practice is organised around several thematic series — the Homeland and Duijiagou paintings explore rural earth through intimate close-up perspectives, the Dancer series anthropomorphises trees as carriers of childhood memory, and the Brilliant Night works carve luminous passages from dense layers of darkness. Across all series, his painting balances rootedness in Chinese soil with contemporary formal experimentation.
