Art appreciation

A central red field rises from below and a second red group answers it at right; blue-green intervals separate the two and form an asymmetrical framework. Cream forms run vertically near the centre-left, suggesting stones, trunks or lit fractured surfaces. Fine green branches cross the boundary between red and blue, and dark needle clusters appear in several areas. Red and blue establish the dominant chromatic force. Branch lines and needles crossing between them retain the reference to pine, keeping image and independent colour in active relation.

Blue shifts among thin stain, opaque cover and granular stamping, moving from grey-blue towards saturated cobalt. Red is pushed into broader, flatter areas, whose edges are broken by green and dark marks. Cream, pale yellow and mauve are scraped repeatedly so that lower layers emerge as hard texture. Pine needles are made through radiating fine strokes or impressions. Large colour masses and intricate branches alternate across the surface, joining oil-paint weight with the open spacing of ink painting.

Yang’s Home, Duilianggou and Dancer series begin with rural surfaces and trees before developing them through contemporary formal experiment. Pine Talk 2 extends that route. Branch line, needle, rock-like texture and the pressure of red against blue convey the pine without a complete outline. Academic training supports the overall structure, while deliberately incomplete recognition allows natural memory to become a material and chromatic relation.

Theme

Style and context

Chinese painting has long paired pine and rock, building rhythm through the direction of branches, the spacing of needles and the worked surface of stone. Twentieth-century artists carried such legible traces into modern oil painting and abstraction, allowing a traditional subject to exist without a complete landscape setting. The surviving needles and branch lines place Pine Talk 2 within semi-abstract painting.

Its contemporary tension lies between the broad red-blue fields and the remaining pine-and-rock marks. Blue provides depth, red advances, and pale scraping with fine branches reconnects the two. Yang does not assign a fixed meaning to every colour. Fine needles and branch lines keep the pine recognisable as broad red and blue fields give the oil paint greater independence.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yang Fuxu (born 1980) graduated from the Guangxi Academy of Arts and later undertook advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and through a China Federation of Literary and Art Circles programme for emerging cultural practitioners. He is a member of the China Artists Association. This training supports both his academic command of form and his continued experiments with material and composition.

His practice includes the Homeland, Duilianggou, Dancer and Brilliant Night series. Homeland and Duilianggou use close views of rural ground; Dancer builds rhythms resembling bodily movement through leaning, crossing and extended trunks; Brilliant Night places artificial light within dense dark layers.

His exhibition record includes Fengyu Southwest in 2013, a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme in 2019 and selection for the national Era, Portrait exhibition in 2023. Across these series, recognisable landscape forms increasingly give way to thick paint, broad colour fields and rhythmic structure.
