Art appreciation

The largest cluster sits right of centre, where deep red and violet roses provide the visual weight. Paler pink and white heads spread around the perimeter. Long, fine stems reach towards the upper corners and disrupt the symmetry associated with a formal bouquet. Empty space is broader on the left and colour denser at the lower right, with the leaning stems keeping the two sides in balance. No vase is clearly established, so the arrangement itself carries the composition.

Short, loaded strokes of pink, red and violet circle darker flower centres. A few cream and pale pink touches register turned petals and highlights. Blue-green, dark green and grey-violet leaves divide overlapping heads and provide cool weight between the warm flowers. At the outer edges the paint thins, and petals rub into the grey-white and pale green ground. The bouquet seems to disperse through handling, while its internal structure remains firm.

Hu Xuebo developed a rigorous foundation in drawing and composition at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and is associated with the New Classical Academy. In this work he does not rely on tightly enclosed academic finish. The discipline is embedded in the relations among centre, petal, stem and leaf, while the margins are allowed to dissolve. That choice preserves the roses as physical forms and gives impasto, asymmetry and interruption an equal role.

Style and context

Flower still life has long served as a study of composition, tonal unity and surface. Modern painters reduced petal-by-petal description, allowing direction, value and adjacent colour to establish volume. Roses continues that development and shifts the traditional centred bouquet into an open arrangement weighted towards one side.

Roses, stems and leaves remain legible, while abstraction occurs locally at their outer edges. Pink and grey-white overlap, and some marks briefly detach from individual petals. Hu Xuebo joins academic command of form to freer contemporary handling, preserving structure while allowing the flowering branches to retain their irregular outward growth.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Hu Xuebo was born in Chongqing in September 1972 and entered the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1993. His studies established the drawing, modelling and compositional methods that underpin his oil painting.

Hu's work is closely connected with Yunnan. He paints Miao and Yi women, gardens and everyday settings, combining carefully modelled figures with saturated colour drawn from clothing, flowers and the surrounding landscape. Over time, these subjects have allowed him to move from general academic exercises towards a more specific account of life and visual culture in southwest China.

His works include Miao Girl, Beauty — Gazing at Fish, Kunming Welcomes You, Ethnic Girl and Watching Flowers Bloom. He participated in the New Classical Academic Oil Painting Exhibition — When Colorful Yunnan Meets Shenzhen in 2020 and the Entering Colorful Yunnan — Welcome COP15 exhibition at the Yunnan Literature and Art Museum in 2021. A solo exhibition was held at the Wuhua District Cultural Art Center in Kunming in 2022.
