Art appreciation

Land occupies almost the entire square format. A central gully curves from the distance towards the lower left and provides the main route into depth. The two slopes meet at different heights, small dark trees mark turns in the middle distance, and tall foreground grasses partly obstruct the route. Broken earth exposes the gully’s depth, while small grasses and flowers soften its rim against the broader, cooler slopes beyond.

Earth yellow, ochre, grey-green and brown-black construct the ground. Short strokes move diagonally or horizontally with the slopes. Fine scratched lines record foreground stems, while white, pink-violet and pale blue touches stand out against darker shrubs. Some paint is heavily deposited and other passages expose the canvas texture, distinguishing dry grass, bare soil and vegetation. Strokes become smaller on the distant hills, and the pale sky keeps the overall contrast low.

Born in Zibo, Shandong, Liu Ping has worked in realist landscape painting and outdoor study for more than four decades. His familiarity with northern terrain supports the clear direction of gully and slope and his observation of autumn vegetation. Plein-air practice also explains the retained speed of the marks. Liu selects a viewpoint close to the ground, presenting Shimenfang first through its physical terrain and plant cover and then through the decisions of paint made on site.

Style and context

Shimenfang is in Linqu, Shandong, and is known for cotinus foliage, karst landforms and pastoral scenery. Shandong Shimenfang Sketch turns away from a scenic monument and concentrates on ochre slopes, shrubs and a winding gully. The low viewpoint records the season through the physical rise and break of the ground.

Outdoor study has played an important role in modern Chinese oil painting. Painters must establish topography, colour and depth before light conditions change, and their brushwork often preserves those immediate judgements. The work coheres through the folded gully, layered autumn colour and foreground vegetation. Liu Ping’s long plein-air practice explains the clear terrain and the simultaneous presence of scraping, ridges and thick paint.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
