Art appreciation

The long-necked bottle stands left of centre, narrowing at the shoulder and rising into the light area of the wall. The faceted bowl sits to its right with the opening turned upward; a dark cast shadow separates it from the background. Both rest on a white tabletop whose projecting corner creates a strong diagonal plane below. The dark front of the table brings the objects forward, while vertical wall and rectangular frame define the room.

The palette stays within grey-brown, cream, blue-grey and pale violet. Cool and warm planes assemble the bottle, whose contour is firm on one side and absorbed by light on the other. The bowl's oval rim is reduced to a few angular changes. Thick white strokes spread across the table, leaving dry texture at its edge, while deep brown and grey-violet consolidate the shadows. Alternating hard and lost edges give the few objects room to breathe.

Peng works across oil and ink, with sustained experience in painted figures and ink landscapes. Here he withdraws both figure and expansive scenery to attend to two ordinary vessels. Large areas of empty wall and selective detail reflect the economy of ink painting; oil training secures the weight of bottle, bowl and table. Limited colour becomes a means of testing how light reshapes a quiet interior.

Style and context

Tonal still life uses a small number of objects, limited colour and stable illumination to study form, and it remains an important part of academic oil painting. Modern artists have added cropping, flattened planes and lost edges to traditional tabletop arrangements, allowing the wall around the objects to participate fully in the composition. Still Life II preserves accurate volume while the projecting table corner and broad light wall introduce a more modern planar structure.

Peng has long practised oil painting in Dafen while continuing to work in ink. The two media contribute differently here: oil gives physical presence to the objects and their shadows, while an ink-like sense of space keeps the background spare. The bottle partly merges with the wall before the bowl's dark shadow pulls the eye forward again. This restraint shows how an apparently simple arrangement can sustain a close study of light and space.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Peng Yuzhong was born in 1969 in Ji'an, Jiangxi, and is based in Shenzhen's Dafen Oil Painting Village. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Jiangxi Normal University and later undertook advanced study at the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University. He is a member of the Guangdong Provincial Artists Association and the Shenzhen Artists Association.

Working across ink painting and oil painting, Peng builds his figure and landscape subjects with rhythmic structure, clear tonal control, and a strong sense of movement. His exhibition record includes the 2004 China Beijing Art Expo, the Guangzhou International Art Fair, the inaugural Shenzhen International Cultural Industry Fair, and the 2008 Dafen Painters Six-Person Exhibition at the Dafen Art Museum, where he also served as a curator.

In 2016, he held the solo ink exhibition Myriad Mountains and Valleys. He received First Prize in the Figure Category at both the 1st and 3rd China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industry Fair live oil-painting competitions.
