Painting analysis

Still Life II is a quiet arrangement of pale forms held inside a white environment. A white cube establishes the central platform; a white bottle stands to the left; a single white flower in the bottle is nearly absorbed by light entering from the window. Around these pale elements, Peng Yuzhong places a black bowl as the only decisive dark note, giving the composition a point of gravity without disturbing its restraint.

The painting depends on small differences rather than strong contrast. Edges appear through slight turns of shadow, the bottle is separated from the background by reflected light, and the flower is seen partly because it almost disappears. The black bowl sharpens the viewer's awareness of the surrounding whiteness: its darkness makes the white cube, wall, bottle, and flower feel more precise, not more decorative.

What gives the work its presence is this tension between visibility and disappearance. Peng does not fill the surface with narrative or abundance; he asks how little variation is needed for a room, an object, and a source of light to become legible. The still life has often served painters as a laboratory for perception, and Still Life II belongs to that lineage. Rather than emphasizing subject matter, Peng Yuzhong uses a limited white register to test how painting can produce volume and depth from restraint. The work turns ordinary objects into a problem of tone, edge, and optical calibration.

Its concerns are close to monochrome and white-on-white experiments in twentieth-century painting, while still retaining the discipline of academic observation. Compared with Giorgio Morandi's repeated studies of bottles and vessels, Peng's approach is less about serial intimacy and more about the pressure of light on structure. The black bowl functions almost like a measuring instrument: by fixing one dark value, it allows the surrounding whites to reveal their internal differences.

Artist Profile

Artist introduction

Peng Yuzhong was born in 1969 in Ji'an, Jiangxi, and is based in Shenzhen's Dafen Oil Painting Village. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Jiangxi Normal University and later undertook advanced study at the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University. He is a member of the Guangdong Provincial Artists Association and the Shenzhen Artists Association.

Working across ink painting and oil painting, Peng builds his figure and landscape subjects with rhythmic structure, clear tonal control, and a strong sense of movement. His exhibition record includes the 2004 China Beijing Art Expo, the Guangzhou International Art Fair, the inaugural Shenzhen International Cultural Industry Fair, and the 2008 Dafen Painters Six-Person Exhibition at the Dafen Art Museum, where he also served as a curator. In 2016, he held the solo ink exhibition Myriad Mountains and Valleys. He received First Prize in the Figure Category at both the 1st and 3rd China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industry Fair live oil-painting competitions.
