Artwork Notes

Art appreciation

There is no central object or horizon. Long bands enter from all four sides, crossing, covering and changing direction. Bright blue recurs at the upper left, through the middle and near the bottom; broader turquoise shapes hold the field together, while violet and grey-blue mediate between them. Fine black lines sometimes follow an edge and sometimes cut straight across it, forming a second network.

Much of the colour is thin and translucent, with mottling and tide-like shifts visible inside each form. The black lines stay narrow but their intersections are deliberately irregular. Pointed ends direct the eye towards another passage, while overlaps create shallow depth. No single route controls the composition; following a different line or band produces a new reading.

Fioroni studied computer science and later worked in web and 3D design, fields organised through layers, interfaces and visual connections. That background helps explain the modular colour and changing network. After committing fully to painting in 2018, he brought hand-drawn variation into this structural thinking. The title links the intersecting parts to the way a person can be known through many qualities rather than one fixed image.

Theme

Style and context

Early geometric abstraction grew from Cubism’s reorganisation of the picture plane, making line, colour and spatial relation the primary subject. Organic abstraction later relaxed strict geometry through bent forms, irregular edges and shapes that seem to grow or drift.

The Good Side of You brings these tendencies together. Blue, turquoise and violet bands establish distinct fields across the surface, while tapered ends and mottled surfaces resist mechanical uniformity. Fine lines cross the colour to create another order of connection. Fioroni’s background in computing and design grounds the layered network in personal experience, and the hand-worked surface keeps each element individual.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Emanuele Fioroni, known professionally as Lele Fioroni, was born in Milan in 1977. He studied computer science at the International University of Milan and later worked in web and 3D design, building a creative practice shaped by structure, interface, and visual communication. He first came to Shenzhen on business in 2009, settled there in 2014, and in 2018 committed fully to painting after years of working alongside design and music.

Fioroni is a cross-disciplinary artist, designer, vocalist, and guitarist, as well as the founder of Art View (Shenzhen) Art Co., Ltd. His work grows from the meeting point between Italian visual energy and the Chinese culture he has lived with in Shenzhen. Chinese characters, urban change, layered surfaces, and material contrast are central to his practice; he often breaks down strokes, blocks, and signs, then rebuilds them through colour, texture, and divided fields.

His materials have included acrylic, gold leaf, masking tape, keyboard parts, cables, and oil paint, depending on the project. This openness gives his work a distinctive position within Shenzhen's contemporary art scene: it carries the discipline of design, the rhythm of music, and the physical freedom of studio painting. Fioroni has presented solo exhibitions in Shenzhen, including Time Labyrinth in 2020 and The 'Art' of Chinese Characters in 2021, and has participated in local and international exchange exhibitions.
