Art appreciation

The triangular roof at left gives the composition a stable block, while the dark vertical trunk on the right anchors the opposite side. Branches reach left across the upper field and, together with the diagonal lane below, frame the central village. The lane enters beside a foreground barrier and narrows past the house. A few tiny dark forms appear farther back; they remain small dark accents. Tree, building and road establish a clear sequence from near to far.

Cream white, blue-grey, pale violet and light green build the snow in loaded strokes. A palette knife or firm brush has dragged through the paint, leaving raised edges. Brown-black, blue-green and cool grey are scraped across the trunk, while small notes of warm yellow-green and pink catch the branches. The violet gable lies between warm and cool, separating itself from the snow without breaking the muted atmosphere. Warmth comes from small changes of colour across lit snow and wood.

Qian Tieshi combines Western oil colour with the selective shorthand of Chinese freehand painting and a deliberately rugged construction. The choices are visible here: houses and lane preserve readable space, while branches, snow and stones are abbreviated with broad strokes and scrapes. He retains the essential structure of a winter village and uses the direction of the paint to record how sunlight changes its cold surfaces. The “warm sun” in the title can therefore be located in the painting itself.

Style and context

Painting snow requires attention to shifts within white. Impressionist painters used blue, violet, pink and yellow-green to record reflected light, freeing snow from the role of an unpainted blank. Warm Sun in Snow Village shares that colour observation while also drawing on the Chinese freehand concern with selection and the movement of the brush.

The work remains a representational village landscape. Gable, trunk, lane and roofs retain clear positions, and the narrowing road establishes the distance between foreground and the houses behind. Local impasto preserves shifts of sunlight across snow and bark. Qian spent many years in art education and oil painting and developed an imagistic oil language during field trips in western China. Here he applies that language to an ordinary winter settlement, balancing observed objects with the pace and weight of his own handling.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Qian Tieshi was born in Kaiyuan, Liaoning Province, in 1964 and is now based in Shenzhen. He graduated in 1990 from the Department of Design and Modeling at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, then worked in art education and oil painting from 1990 to 2002. He is a member of the Guangdong Artists Association and serves as vice chairman of the Hong Kong International Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association.

His practice centers on what he describes as searching for oil painting between likeness and unlikeness. Qian developed an imagistic oil-painting language that combines Western impressionist color, the expressive spirit of Chinese freehand painting, and a broad, forceful treatment of form. From 2002 to 2006 he made repeated field trips to Tibet, creating western-region subjects while also studying Chen-style taiji and bringing its sense of movement and inner rhythm into his painting.

His works have been selected for national and provincial exhibitions, including New Artists and New Works, Guangdong Artists Association anniversary exhibitions, and Shenzhen’s Pengcheng Autumn Art Exhibition, where Tibetan Wind received an excellence award.
