Art appreciation

The woman stands just left of centre, the accordion crossing her torso and its keyboard directing attention towards her hands. A substantial tree trunk rises diagonally behind her and opens into a sheltering canopy. The other uniformed figures occupy the darker background in loose positions: one appears seated, another turned towards a companion. Their informal spacing establishes a period of rest without specifying whether the music has begun or ended.

Cui establishes the figures through controlled drawing, then surrounds them with layered green. The woman’s face and hands receive close attention, while warmer notes in the accordion and clothing hold against the foliage. Short touches of deep green, yellow, and blue-green build the leaves, with small openings of pale daylight between them. Broader grey-brown strokes describe the bark, anchoring the composition and giving the gathering a tangible outdoor setting.

An accordion could function as a public emblem, yet Cui returns it to the people who play and hear it. The woman is not performing frontally, and the group does not behave as a formal audience. Music belongs to their shared time. Cui’s realist training is particularly effective in the raised hand, slight turn, and varied resting postures. Through those observations, collective military life retains its public context while the different poses keep each person distinct within the group.

North Korean academic figure painting developed through a socialist-realist emphasis on legible bodies, coherent settings, and events drawn from collective life. Soldiers, workers, and public activity are established subjects within that tradition. A Song for Soldiers preserves its narrative clarity through uniform, instrument, and group, but centres on people gathered during a rest. The public subject is therefore described through a specific arrangement of bodies, shade and musical instrument.

Cui graduated from Pyongyang Art University and became a First-Class Painter at Mansudae Art Studio. His training supports the careful organisation of several figures and the use of one object to focus a scene. Here the accordion provides that visual centre, while the people’s differing positions keep the group from becoming a ceremonial line. Technical control is applied to a modest interval of music and shade, making military experience specific through body language.

About the artist

Born on November 30, 1982, in Pyongyang’s Phothonggang District, Cui Dongzhe graduated from Pyongyang Art University in 2007 and became a First-Class Painter at Mansudae Art Studio. His training is rooted in North Korea’s state-supported academic system, where oil painting, figure construction, and clear narrative composition remain central disciplines.

Cui specializes in oil painting and realistic figure work, with particular strength in facial expression and body language. His subjects often come from soldier and worker life, but his paintings do not rely only on public symbolism; they search for a readable human state within disciplined academic form.

His oil painting After Training received a silver medal at the exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea. That record, together with his position at Mansudae Art Studio, places him within an active North Korean realist lineage where technical control and psychological clarity are treated as essential artistic values.
