Art appreciation

The main boat enters from the right and occupies the centre, its blue side extending horizontally beneath the raised white wheelhouse. Railings, masts and ropes produce a closely woven network of verticals and diagonals. A round yellow lifebuoy is immediately visible among the blue and white parts. Weathered boards angle from the foreground towards the vessel above dark water or dock shadow. The smaller boat and low shore at left show that this is an active harbour setting rather than an isolated marine portrait.

Deep blue, cobalt, grey-blue and touches of green model the hull in substantial strokes, retaining the abrasion of wood or painted metal. Grey-white and pale yellow separate the lit planes of the wheelhouse; windows and rails are tightened with near-black marks. Masts and rigging remain fine but firm. Ochre and grey-brown scraping gives the foreground boards a rougher surface. The boat’s weight comes from components fitted together and from the material history left on them.

Han Wanjiu grew up near the Bohai coast, and ports, fishing boats and tidal flats became central to his mature work. Later study at Tsinghua and advanced training in the Repin tradition strengthened his structural observation. He chooses a position close to the side because a working vessel is understood through construction, repair and use. Lifebuoy, coverings, boards and shore plants establish the harbour routine and the vessel’s working character.

Style and context

The harbour subject joins landscape, vessel construction and an environment of labour. Curved hull, rectangular wheelhouse, fine rigging and rough quay timber each require a different kind of mark and show wear from use. Boat concentrates these relations at close range, with the smaller vessel and shore establishing the harbour beyond.

Han Wanjiu works from realist observation and later strengthened his command of form and tone through training connected to the Repin tradition. Layered blues construct the working vessel, while exposed marks describe abrasion, boards and shore plants. His coastal upbringing, sustained study of boats and later academic training meet directly in the structure and surfaces of this painting.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Han Wanjiu (b. 1952, Anshan, Liaoning) is an oil painter based in northeastern China and a member of the Liaoning Provincial Artists Association. He grew up near the Bohai Sea coast, where the harbours, fishing boats, and tidal flats of the region became the primary subject of his mature work.

In 2009, after decades of self-taught practice, he entered the Oil Painting Department of Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing, where he studied under Wang Hongjian, Zheng Yi, Xin Dongwang, and Wang Tieniu — four teachers associated with Chinese academic realist training. In 2011 he joined the Russian Repin Oil Painting Advanced Research Class, adding classical European material techniques to his foundation. His graduation painting Joy was shown at the Tsinghua Academy exhibition.

His harbour paintings are developed through sustained observation of the Bohai coast. He paints harbours and coastal scenes from sustained, on-site observation rather than studio invention, and the combination of his Tsinghua compositional training with Russian material handling supports the solid construction of hulls, rigging and harbour space.
