Painting analysis

Two blue fishing boats sit low in the water at a weathered wooden dock, their hulls resting against the exposed pilings of low tide. The light is late-afternoon gold — warm across the sky and catching the tops of the masts and flags, but the boats themselves stay cool: steel-blue and grey, with a single yellow life ring on the cabin wall that holds its own against all that blue. Green vegetation pushes up through the foreground planks, bright and a little wild, as if the dock is slowly being taken back.

The painting holds still but the eye moves — there is a diagonal line running from the lower-left jetty up through the main vessel's mast into the sky that keeps the composition from settling into a flat postcard. The trawler's hull is painted with enough layering to show the weight of the boat and the texture of its steel plating, but the brushwork never tightens into precision for its own sake. The wheelhouse windows catch a thin strip of reflected sky, and the mudflat to the right tells the viewer this is a working harbour between voyages.

There is something of Eugène Boudin in the way Han Wanjiu treats this scene — not the charm of the French coast but the same honesty about what a harbour actually looks like when the boats are idle, the tide is out, and the light is about to change. Oil on canvas, 60 × 80 cm.

Han Wanjiu paints harbours the way someone who has spent years watching them actually works: from the dock, at tide level, with attention to the specific colours of hulls and sky at a particular hour. He is not a Symbolist harbour painter or a tourist-postcard colourist — his work belongs to the strand of Chinese plein-air realism that focuses on the material reality of a place.

His training at Tsinghua University under Wang Hongjian and Xin Dongwang connected him to a line of Chinese painters who combine Soviet-influenced technical discipline with contemporary subject matter, and his subsequent study at the Russian Repin Academy added another layer of classical material handling. The result is harbour painting that is more specific than atmospheric: the blues of the trawlers and the golds of the sky are not impressionistic evocations but observed, constructed colour relationships.

Artist introduction

Han Wanjiu (b. 1952, Anshan, Liaoning) is an oil painter based in northeastern China and a member of the Liaoning Provincial Artists Association. He grew up near the Bohai Sea coast, where the harbours, fishing boats, and tidal flats of the region became the primary subject of his mature work.

In 2009, after decades of self-taught practice, he entered the Oil Painting Department of Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing, where he studied under Wang Hongjian, Zheng Yi, Xin Dongwang, and Wang Tieniu — four artists at the forefront of Chinese academic realism. In 2011 he joined the Russian Repin Oil Painting Advanced Research Class, adding classical European material techniques to his foundation. His graduation painting Joy was shown at the Tsinghua Academy exhibition.

His work has been sold through Shenzhen Yihai Auction and Beijing Hanmo Art Auction. He paints harbours and coastal scenes from sustained, on-site observation rather than studio invention, and the combination of his Tsinghua compositional training with Russian material handling gives his harbour paintings a distinctive weight and specificity.
