Art appreciation

The ceramic pot sits at the lower centre, where its broad shoulder and rounded body form a stable base. The bouquet expands into an irregular oval. Large yellow blooms occupy the middle and upper right, white clusters cross the centre, and violet and orange-red heads gather around the outside. The fallen flower lies close to the lower edge, bringing colour onto the table and establishing a small interval in front of the upright vessel.

Short, thick strokes repeatedly layer the petals. Ochre and brown centres enter the yellows; grey-violet shadows turn through the white flowers; purple shifts between bright pink and deep colour. Few leaves receive complete outlines and most become dark openings between blossoms. Cream, grey-brown and cool green model the pot in broad, steadier passages. A thin grey-green ground retains brush marks, supporting the light flowers without hardening their contours.

Li Peizhong has long painted northern landscapes, flowers and domestic arrangements. Russian-influenced tonal practice gives the pot and bouquet a convincing collective mass, while an Impressionist sensitivity to colour allows adjacent strokes to build petals directly. Bloom does not depend on naming each species. Li is concerned with how a bouquet occupies the canvas through chromatic density, dark intervals and outward growth.

Style and context

Flower still life asks a painter to coordinate fragile petals, overlapping volume and transient light. Modern oil painting increasingly left divided brushwork and variable paint thickness visible, allowing the presence of flowers to emerge from the gathering and dispersal of colour. Chinese painters absorbed these methods through academy still-life training and extended them through more personal handling.

Here the ceramic vessel provides a steady centre while the dense bouquet reaches upwards and sideways. Warm yellow and orange-red are moderated by violet and grey-green. The fallen bloom places a separate pink accent at the foot of the pot. The composition retains structure learned through observation and the immediacy of direct paint, showing how Li turns a familiar floral subject into a study of colour and material.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Peizhong (b. 1957, Shenyang) is an oil painter based in northeast China and a member of both the Chinese Arts and Crafts Artists Association and the Liaoning Provincial Artists Association. He trained in Shenyang during a period when the city's art academies were strongly influenced by the Russian academic tradition, and that inheritance — its emphasis on tonal weight, plein-air practice, and atmospheric depth — remains visible in his work today.

His primary subject is the northern Chinese landscape: the farmlands, rivers, and seasonal shifts of Liaoning and its surrounding provinces. He paints these scenes in a style that combines the heavy, earthy tonalities of the Russian landscape school with the brighter chromatic handling and light sensitivity of European Impressionism. Still life — flowers, fruit, household arrangements — forms a secondary but consistent part of his output.

Professionally, he has served for decades as art editor-in-chief at a children's newspaper publishing house in Shenyang, a position that has given him a long-term, stable base for his painting practice. His work has been shown in regional and national exhibitions across northeastern China.
