Art appreciation

The main peak rises from the lower edge almost to the top and carries most of the composition’s weight. A lower, narrow peak stands to its left, separated by a bright opening of sky. The large mass leans slightly towards the centre while the smaller form remains upright. Dense vegetation makes an irregular base across the lower register; pale mountains and open sky behind it bring the dark rock forward.

Violet-grey, blue-black, deep green and red-brown planes build the cliffs. Loaded strokes turn with the rock faces, and pink or pale yellow touches catch the final light along exposed edges. Shorter greens, blues and russets break up the vegetation below, becoming thinner with distance. The smaller peak’s rounded crown and vertical shaft may suggest a bodily or phallic association. Placed against the heavy main peak, this restrained suggestion extends the natural silhouette towards an image of the body and organic life.

Hu Guoliang made nature the centre of a practice spanning oil, watercolour and acrylic. He studied with Gao Jianfu, Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai, and became known for forceful colour, free brushwork and impasto. Danxia terrain, with its cliffs, peaks and pillars, gives those methods a firm physical subject. By placing the two rock forms frontally, he can address geological weight and imaginative resemblance at once; dusk frees violet, green, red and pink to model the rock beyond its daylight local colour.

Style and context

Danxia landforms develop characteristically in red sandstone and conglomerate and include cliffs, peaks and stone pillars. Their geological structure remains clear, yet isolated contours have also prompted resemblances to figures, animals and objects. Danxia Dusk holds physical recognition and imaginative association within the same view.

The Lingnan School valued direct observation, working from life and a renewed use of colour. Hu Guoliang extended that inheritance through oil, watercolour and acrylic. Here recognisable rock forms are strengthened by impasto and heightened colour. The main peak’s mass, the narrow peak’s bodily suggestion and the evening sky allow observed terrain and personal response to meet.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Hu Guoliang (1930–2021) was a Chinese oil painter from Shunde, Guangdong, and a member of the China Artists Association. He served as Professor in the Department of Arts and Crafts at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, where he taught for over six decades as head of the Teaching and Research Group. He studied under the Lingnan school pioneers Gao Jianfu, Guan Shanyue, and Li Xiongcai, graduating from the Central South China Academy of Fine Arts in 1955.

His work centred on the natural landscape, executed in oil, watercolour, acrylic, and gouache. He was known for bold colour, fluid brushwork, and an impasto technique that gave geological formations tactile presence. His published collections were titled "Tribute to Nature" — an expression of his lifelong reverence for the natural world.

He donated extensively to public institutions: 60 works to the Heyuan municipal government and over 200 to the Yangchun municipal government, where a dedicated gallery was established. These donations placed a substantial body of his work in public institutions.
