Artwork Notes

Art appreciation

Horizontal bars are stacked from top to bottom. Black dominates, with long white and grey passages repeatedly lighting the field. Pale green gathers around the centre and upper section, violet is shorter, and blue and red appear only as small accents. Long bands and clipped blocks interlock; some edges are firm, while others are jagged or rubbed away. Breaks in the light passages divide the rows, while nearby fragments reconnect them across the black ground.

Wide grey areas are relatively even but retain joins from the brush. White is often dragged dryly across black, producing rough broken edges. Pale green and violet are partly covered and emerge only in narrow runs, with earlier colours visible beneath. Black functions as an interval between the bands as well as a ground. The restrained palette makes small differences in cool colour, thickness and abrasion increasingly apparent.

Fioroni’s early work in computing and design made layer, order and visual linkage part of his creative vocabulary; music added an experience of repetition and silence. MEMORIES 1 brings those structures into a cooler and more reduced palette. Each light band reads like a retained fragment, black controls the pauses, and hand abrasion ensures that no unit is exactly repeated.

Theme

Style and context

Geometric abstraction made shape, interval and arrangement subjects in themselves. Minimalism later reduced colour and form so that subtle differences could emerge inside repeated structures. Fioroni retains a serial horizontal order across the canvas, yet every stripe records manual adjustment instead of industrial uniformity.

MEMORIES 1 controls the whole through black, white and grey, with pale green, violet and a few blue-red accents providing restrained variation. Layered thinking determines the structure; scraping, covering and broken edges introduce elapsed time. Title and surface meet in the fragmentary nature of memory: order persists, while its contents remain partial, visibly abraded and changed.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Emanuele Fioroni, known professionally as Lele Fioroni, was born in Milan in 1977. He studied computer science at the International University of Milan and later worked in web and 3D design, building a creative practice shaped by structure, interface, and visual communication. He first came to Shenzhen on business in 2009, settled there in 2014, and in 2018 committed fully to painting after years of working alongside design and music.

Fioroni is a cross-disciplinary artist, designer, vocalist, and guitarist, as well as the founder of Art View (Shenzhen) Art Co., Ltd. His work grows from the meeting point between Italian visual energy and the Chinese culture he has lived with in Shenzhen. Chinese characters, urban change, layered surfaces, and material contrast are central to his practice; he often breaks down strokes, blocks, and signs, then rebuilds them through colour, texture, and divided fields.

His materials have included acrylic, gold leaf, masking tape, keyboard parts, cables, and oil paint, depending on the project. This openness gives his work a distinctive position within Shenzhen's contemporary art scene: it carries the discipline of design, the rhythm of music, and the physical freedom of studio painting. Fioroni has presented solo exhibitions in Shenzhen, including Time Labyrinth in 2020 and The 'Art' of Chinese Characters in 2021, and has participated in local and international exchange exhibitions.
