Lilies and Roses is built around a quiet contrast between openness and density. The white lilies rise through the upper field with broad, luminous petals, while the roses gather lower in warmer reds and pinks, giving the still life a grounded center of gravity. Dark green leaves and the subdued background hold the flowers in place, so the bouquet does not feel decorative only; it feels as if the light is slowly finding each bloom from within the dark.

Hu Xuebo’s handling gives the flowers weight without making them stiff. The lilies are painted with controlled planes of white and cream, their edges turning gently into shadow, while the roses are denser, more compact, and warmer in touch. This difference matters: the lilies open the space upward, the roses pull it back toward the table and vase. Between them, the green leaves act like a dark structure, keeping the arrangement calm and balanced.

Artist introduction

Hu Xuebo was born in Chongqing in September 1972 and entered the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1993, where he developed the disciplined modelling and compositional skills that define his approach. He is associated with the New Classical Academic style, combining the technical precision of academic oil painting with the vivid chromatic intensity and cultural presence of Yunnan's ethnic minority communities.

His paintings are closely connected with Yunnan and the visual world of China's southwestern cultures. Miao and Yi women, garden scenes, and richly coloured everyday settings appear in works that balance academic structure with saturated colour and emotional immediacy. Representative works include Miao Girl (125 × 160 cm), Beauty — Gazing at Fish (115 × 160 cm), Kunming Welcomes You (85 × 160 cm, 2021), Ethnic Girl (120 × 150 cm), and Watching Flowers Bloom (120 × 150 cm).

His exhibition history includes the New Classical Academic Oil Painting Exhibition — When Colorful Yunnan Meets Shenzhen (2020), the Entering Colorful Yunnan — Welcome COP15 exhibition at the Yunnan Literature and Art Museum (2021), and a major solo presentation at the Wuhua District Cultural Art Center in Kunming (2022).
