Art appreciation

The lilies rise from the centre towards the upper right in different sizes and orientations, with the foremost blooms close to the picture plane. The lower rose group extends from the left towards the middle and joins the lilies in a wide arc. A large and a small vessel sit close together and are linked by dark reflections on the table. The changing heights of the flower heads connect the low roses at left with the central and upper-right lilies.

White lilies contain pale violet, grey-blue, light yellow and touches of pink; close differences model each turn of the petals. Slender red-ochre stamens supply linear accents. Pink, cream and muted red strokes curl inward to construct the roses. Dark leaves gradually merge with the background, while grey-green transparent layers and vertical reflections describe the glass. The restrained tonal range allows the separate flower groups to remain continuous.

Hu Xuebo trained in rigorous figure and compositional methods at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. His association with the New Classical Academy approach places value on accurate form and integrated colour. That background explains the careful distinctions among lily and rose volumes, petal directions and transparent vessels. He also retains open edges and visible brushwork, moving the flowers beyond a polished academic exercise and towards the colour conditions of a particular viewing.

Style and context

Academic realist still life is grounded in drawing, value, perspective and composition. Flowers test a painter’s handling of delicate volume, overlap and slight temperature changes within pale colour. Modern painters retain these skills while allowing brush marks and loosened edges to remain visible. Lilies and Roses sits between exact construction and a contemporary attention to material.

The work avoids the standard symmetry of one vase at the centre. Low roses at left and taller lilies at right distribute weight across the canvas, while the two vessels and their reflections reconnect the groups. White, pink, violet and blue-green remain tonally close, and varied flower directions animate the horizontal format. Composition, surface and colour carry the painting through the contrast of pale petals, pink roses and dark leaves.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Hu Xuebo was born in Chongqing in September 1972 and entered the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1993. His studies established the drawing, modelling and compositional methods that underpin his oil painting.

Hu's work is closely connected with Yunnan. He paints Miao and Yi women, gardens and everyday settings, combining carefully modelled figures with saturated colour drawn from clothing, flowers and the surrounding landscape. Over time, these subjects have allowed him to move from general academic exercises towards a more specific account of life and visual culture in southwest China.

His works include Miao Girl, Beauty — Gazing at Fish, Kunming Welcomes You, Ethnic Girl and Watching Flowers Bloom. He participated in the New Classical Academic Oil Painting Exhibition — When Colorful Yunnan Meets Shenzhen in 2020 and the Entering Colorful Yunnan — Welcome COP15 exhibition at the Yunnan Literature and Art Museum in 2021. A solo exhibition was held at the Wuhua District Cultural Art Center in Kunming in 2022.
