Art appreciation

The circular boundary concentrates attention on the bent trunk. It rises slightly right of centre, leans left and then turns sharply towards the upper right, where the branch nearly reaches the rim. Red occupies almost half the support and deep blue holds the larger space on the left. The yellow trunk runs between them like a structural hinge. Needles and fine branches appear only at selected points, enough to preserve the identity and direction of the tree.

Cobalt, indigo, dark green and black are repeatedly layered in the blue field. Scrapes and raised deposits keep the dark area active and dense. The red is more continuous, although blue shows through cracks and dragged passages. Yellow, orange, blue and small amounts of white build the trunk in uneven impasto, and its broken edges convey pressure and growth. With no conventional horizon inside the circle, colour fields and trunk create the entire space.

In Yang Fuxu’s Dancer series, trees stand for people and carry childhood memories; his Homeland and Duilianggou series likewise return to rural surfaces and remembered places. Pine Talk 1 continues that sustained attention to trees. The pine is not treated as botanical illustration. Its turns, bark-like paint and surrounding chromatic pressure do most of the expressive work. Tree forms recur across Yang Fuxu’s practice; in this work, the bent trunk, divided colour fields and thick impasto give the pine both physical resistance and formal tension.

Style and context

Pines have a long history in Chinese painting, where the movement of trunk and branch and the rhythm of the brush often describe the tree’s condition. Modern and contemporary painters have enlarged and simplified those structures, allowing a branch to function as both natural image and abstract construction. Pine Talk 1 retains a trunk, branching and needle marks while reducing the ground to red and blue fields, placing the work between representation and abstraction.

The circular format removes the ground line of a conventional rectangular landscape. The trunk rises directly from the curved lower rim, and its upper branch nearly touches the edge; red and blue press against this yellow-ochre structure from opposite sides. Yang reorganises a traditional pine subject through impasto, scraping and strong colour. The “talk” of the title is carried by the turns of the branches, rubbed paint and pressure between adjacent fields.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yang Fuxu (born 1980) graduated from the Guangxi Academy of Arts and later undertook advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and through a China Federation of Literary and Art Circles programme for emerging cultural practitioners. He is a member of the China Artists Association. This training supports both his academic command of form and his continued experiments with material and composition.

His practice includes the Homeland, Duilianggou, Dancer and Brilliant Night series. Homeland and Duilianggou use close views of rural ground; Dancer builds rhythms resembling bodily movement through leaning, crossing and extended trunks; Brilliant Night places artificial light within dense dark layers.

His exhibition record includes Fengyu Southwest in 2013, a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme in 2019 and selection for the national Era, Portrait exhibition in 2023. Across these series, recognisable landscape forms increasingly give way to thick paint, broad colour fields and rhythmic structure.
