Painting analysis

This circular painting treats the pine not as a landscape motif but as a living presence inside memory. The trunk and branching forms rise, twist, and gather like bodies leaning toward one another. Red, blue, yellow, and green do not describe natural light — they act like voices, each colour pressing into the next as if the tree were speaking through rhythm, pressure, and gesture.

The narrative is not a literal outdoor scene. It feels closer to a childhood recollection in which nature has learned human language. The tree becomes companion, witness, and emotional figure. Its branches hold a sense of conversation, while the enclosed round format makes the image feel protected — a remembered place carried inward rather than a view observed from a distance.

In the Chinese ink-painting tradition, the pine was never just a tree — it was character cast in brushwork: twisted trunk standing for stubbornness, leaning posture for resilience, needles for endurance through the harshest winter. Yang Fuxu inherits that spirit but translates it into oil. Where the ink painter used line and wash to capture the pine's bones, he uses colour and impasto to capture its pulse — and the round format echoes the closeness of a hand-scroll, a world held in the palm rather than spread across a wall. Within contemporary Chinese oil painting, this approach connects rural memory with a subjective language of colour. Artist Profile

Artist introduction

Yang Fuxu (b. 1980) trained at the Guangxi Academy of Arts before completing advanced studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles' programme for emerging cultural leaders. A member of the Chinese Artists Association, he is recognised among China's new literary and art community — a designation for artists outside the traditional state academy system who have achieved national prominence.

His exhibition record spans more than a decade: selections for the Fengyu Southwest exhibition (2013), a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme (2019), and inclusion in the national Era, Portrait exhibition (2023). His paintings are held in private collections across China.

His practice is organised around several thematic series — the Homeland and Duijiagou paintings explore rural earth through intimate close-up perspectives, the Dancer series anthropomorphises trees as carriers of childhood memory, and the Brilliant Night works carve luminous passages from dense layers of darkness. Across all series, his painting balances rootedness in Chinese soil with contemporary formal experimentation.
