Art appreciation

The upper half is an expansive cream field with only gentle arcs, seams and raised paint. Below, blue-violet ridges rise and fall across the canvas: sharp dark peaks alternate with pale rounded crests and lilac hollows. A compact green-blue band closes the lower edge. The central white descent interrupts the horizontal sequence and draws the eye down through the mountain structure.

The sky is repeatedly spread and levelled, although joins and small abrasions remain visible. Cobalt, violet, pale blue-grey and touches of warm colour are pulled into thick curved ridges. Dark green and ultramarine compress the base. The vertical white mark is dragged through the darker layer, reading at once as a possible waterfall and as a physical stroke that cuts the bands of colour.

Yang Fuxu’s Homeland and Duijiagou series examine the texture of rural ground at close range, and his broader practice repeatedly simplifies natural forms. Here he retains the overlap and cadence of mountain ridges but removes descriptive detail from sky and land. Familiar terrain survives through layered colour, accumulated weight and the single descending mark, showing why abstraction is useful to his continuing study of place.

Style and context

One route into twentieth-century abstraction began with landscape. Early abstract painters, including Wassily Kandinsky, progressively reduced mountains and other natural forms to lines, colour fields and rhythms; Abstract Expressionism later made the movement and substance of paint central to the work.

Mountain Soul No. 2 stands between observed landscape and abstraction. Blue-violet ridges, cream sky and a dark green foothold preserve the mountain reference, while broad curves, impasto and scraping carry equal weight. Yang Fuxu’s experience with rural terrain gives the simplified forms a physical density, and the white vertical introduces a decisive break in the horizontal range.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yang Fuxu (born 1980) graduated from the Guangxi Academy of Arts and later undertook advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and through a China Federation of Literary and Art Circles programme for emerging cultural practitioners. He is a member of the China Artists Association. This training supports both his academic command of form and his continued experiments with material and composition.

His practice includes the Homeland, Duilianggou, Dancer and Brilliant Night series. Homeland and Duilianggou use close views of rural ground; Dancer builds rhythms resembling bodily movement through leaning, crossing and extended trunks; Brilliant Night places artificial light within dense dark layers.

His exhibition record includes Fengyu Southwest in 2013, a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme in 2019 and selection for the national Era, Portrait exhibition in 2023. Across these series, recognisable landscape forms increasingly give way to thick paint, broad colour fields and rhythmic structure.
