Art appreciation

The red façade occupies the upper half, with rows of windows and projecting balconies establishing a stable grid. Signs, doors and stalls form a denser band below, and people spread from left to right along the pavement. The red sign of the bicycle-parts shop is close in colour to the wall but remains legible in white; a black hair-design sign adds a contrasting horizontal. The largest foreground man crosses the path of vendors and dog, placing the viewer on the opposite side of the street.

Coral and orange ochre spread broadly across the wall. Grey-white, dark green and violet-black define window frames, iron rails and the arched entrance. Short yellow-green and deep-green marks pile vegetables on the cart; red, violet and blue-green distinguish hats, aprons and clothes. Violet-grey pavement is handled more loosely and interrupted by small highlights. The broad fixed façade sets off the broken strokes of moving street life.

Li spent decades as the art editor of a children’s newspaper. He is best known for northern landscapes and still life, while Old Street applies the same tonal control to urban observation. Readable signs, exchanged gestures and the dog moving among the stalls make the old street socially specific. The street’s character is made jointly by architecture and its users.

Theme

Style and context

Urban genre painting records local ways of life through streets, shops and ordinary activity. Realism and later street sketching both valued unplanned encounters; painted signs can also identify place and trade. Old Street includes the sign for Hongshun Bicycle Parts Shop and a hair-design business, locating the market in a specific commercial street instead of a generic nostalgic setting.

Li’s Russian academic background supports figure proportion, architectural perspective and tonal weight, while brighter Impressionist colour opens subtle changes across the red wall. The people are not staged into a uniform action: one bends, another chooses vegetables, one passes and the dog remains beside the cart. Their different movements explain how the street is actually used.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Peizhong (b. 1957, Shenyang) is an oil painter based in northeast China and a member of both the Chinese Arts and Crafts Artists Association and the Liaoning Provincial Artists Association. He trained in Shenyang during a period when the city's art academies were strongly influenced by the Russian academic tradition, and that inheritance — its emphasis on tonal weight, plein-air practice, and atmospheric depth — remains visible in his work today.

His primary subject is the northern Chinese landscape: the farmlands, rivers, and seasonal shifts of Liaoning and its surrounding provinces. He paints these scenes in a style that combines the heavy, earthy tonalities of the Russian landscape school with the brighter chromatic handling and light sensitivity of European Impressionism. Still life — flowers, fruit, household arrangements — forms a secondary but consistent part of his output.

Professionally, he has served for decades as art editor-in-chief at a children's newspaper publishing house in Shenyang, a position that has given him a long-term, stable base for his painting practice. His work has been shown in regional and national exhibitions across northeastern China.
