Art appreciation

The sitter fills almost the entire vertical canvas from the chest upwards. His head faces the viewer, while the level shoulders give the lower part of the composition a stable base. White hair spreads to either side and the glasses frame slightly narrowed eyes. His closed mouth and relaxed posture avoid ceremonial display. We first encounter an elderly individual looking back at us, and only then begin to examine the uniform and decorations.

Warm brown, pink-grey and ochre model the forehead, eye bags, cheeks and loosened skin around the mouth. The jacket is handled more broadly in grey-green and blue-grey, while the red neckerchief supplies the strongest area of colour. Small touches of gold, red and blue register the medals and ribbons as small colour and metallic accents. The loosely brushed trees remain low in contrast, setting off the more sustained modelling of the face.

Wei Jizhong trained in oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and has worked extensively with historical subjects. After retirement, he also completed the self-funded plein-air project Today’s Long March Road. That background helps explain his equal attention to likeness and historical memory here. The title, clothing and decorations establish a commemorative identity; the weathered face and direct gaze locate that history in one person who lived into old age.

Style and context

The full name of the Dongjiang Column was the Dongjiang Column of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Force. It was formally established in December 1943 at present-day Tuyang Village in Shenzhen and became an important force behind enemy lines in South China. Its activities extended through the East River region and Hong Kong, where the Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Brigade also helped rescue cultural figures and international allies. The title places the sitter within this history of resistance.

Commemorative portraits often use uniform, decorations and frontal composition to convey public service. Wei Jizhong also retains white hair, glasses, softened skin and a natural expression, so the veteran is encountered first as an individual. The badges make the veteran's military identity more explicit, while the aged face and direct gaze bring a large historical narrative into the scale of one life.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Wei Jizhong was born on April 10, 1942 in Nanchuan, Chongqing. He graduated in 1965 from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied in Luo Gongliu's studio with teachers including Luo Gongliu, Li Tianxiang, and Lin Gang.

His career has included work at Guangzhou Art Company and Shenzhen Shatoujiao Advertising Company. From 1994, he taught at Shenzhen Polytechnic, where he later retired as a professor. He is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and serves as an adviser to the Yantian District Artists Association.

His representative works include Iron Girls of Dazhai, exhibited at the National Art Museum of China in 1965, Motherland, My Mother, selected for the 6th National Art Exhibition, Decision, 1992, and Roots in Zhongyingjie Street. After retirement, he completed the self-funded plein air project Today's Long March Road and held multiple red-themed sketch exhibitions.
