Painting analysis

At first glance, Purity No. 3 is funny: three orange pigs are floating in a clean blue sky, each with a red rose in its mouth. The middle pig is upside down, hooves in the air, looking oddly composed for an animal that has no business being airborne. Chen Yudong paints it with a solid round body, so the joke does not feel flimsy; the pig still has weight, even while it floats.

What makes the painting stay with you is how simple the scene is. There is no complicated background — just blue sky, soft clouds, a few green leaves, orange bodies and red roses. The space is almost too clean, like a children's picture book after something has gone quietly wrong. The pigs are trying to look graceful, maybe even romantic, but they cannot stop being pigs, and that is where the charm comes from.

The roses make the humor gentler. They turn the flying pigs from a quick visual gag into something more earnest: awkward creatures carrying flowers as if they are on their way to offer them. Chen Yudong's work belongs to Chinese contemporary surrealism, shaped by academic realist training and by the conceptual turn in post-2000 Chinese painting. His animals are not decorative mascots; they behave like actors in a fable, carrying human wishes and embarrassments without turning into human figures.

Unlike the human satire of Yue Minjun or Fang Lijun, Chen often keeps people outside the frame and lets symbolic animals hold the tension. The closest international parallel is Leonora Carrington's animal imagery: fantasy used not as escape, but as a way to make desire, social manners, and absurd rules visible.

Artist introduction

Chen Yudong, born in 1983 in rural China, graduated from the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts and works as an independent painter. His practice is rooted in contemporary surrealism and conceptual art, with a strong foundation in realist modeling.

His paintings often recombine human figures, symbolic animals, and tense staged situations across imagined time and space. Rather than using distortion for shock, he places clearly painted subjects into impossible settings, allowing absurdity and metaphor to question the boundary between reality, fantasy, and social order.

His representative work Survival of the Fittest? (2010) shows this approach clearly: biological metaphor becomes a way to examine hierarchy and power. Across his practice, Chen's position is that of a narrative painter who uses clarity of image to carry difficult questions.
