Art appreciation

The central orange head occupies the lower half of the canvas. Human expression enters through its frontal eyes, while the nose and mouth retain porcine features. A red rose crosses the snout diagonally and its long stem runs to the right. An inverted pig body rises from the crown with its legs in the air; two smaller animals drift apart above. The open blue field isolates each figure, while falling flowers and leaves loosely connect the upper and lower zones.

Thin, even blue-grey establishes a sky without normal ground or gravity. The central face receives the closest modelling, with orange-yellow, ochre and pale brown turning across forehead, sockets, cheeks and snout. The upper pigs are flatter and closer to silhouettes. Saturated red flowers and green leaves appear sparingly, while black is reserved for eyes and hooves. The contrast between a credibly modelled face and simplified bodies makes individual parts convincing without resolving the whole into reality.

Chen often recombines figures, symbolic animals and impossible settings to pose conceptual questions through clear images. The pigs are neither threatening nor reduced to caricature; the central gaze is direct and serious. The rose introduces associations of tenderness, courtship and gift-giving. Rather than fixing a single allegory, the artist sets the animal’s direct gaze against the formal red rose in the incompatibility of familiar forms. His rural upbringing also gives the livestock image a basis in lived experience.

Theme

Style and context

Surrealism brought dreams, free association and irrational juxtaposition into twentieth-century art, using the rearrangement of familiar objects to create psychological and conceptual tension. Contemporary Chinese narrative painting has adapted this strategy by placing animals, ordinary experience and social metaphor within the same scene. Purity No. 3 constructs that dislocation from recognisable pigs, human eyes and roses; the clearer the images, the less they submit to everyday logic.

Chen graduated from the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts. Realist training lends credibility to the central face, while a conceptual approach reorganises body, sky and floating objects. The expanse of blue removes normal environmental cues, leaving each sign clearly separated. Precision and absurdity coexist: the handling remains calm while the relationships remain unstable, leaving the viewer to test what “purity” might mean here.

About the artist

Chen Yudong, born in 1983 in rural China, graduated from the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts and works as an independent painter. His practice is rooted in contemporary surrealism and conceptual art, with a strong foundation in realist modeling. His paintings often recombine human figures, symbolic animals, and tense staged situations across imagined time and space.

Rather than using distortion for shock, he places clearly painted subjects into impossible settings, allowing absurdity and metaphor to question the boundary between reality, fantasy, and social order. His representative work Survival of the Fittest?

(2010) shows this approach clearly: biological metaphor becomes a way to examine hierarchy and power. Across his practice, Chen's position is that of a narrative painter who uses clarity of image to carry difficult questions.
