Art appreciation

The paved foreground spreads widely from the lower edge and narrows towards the central wall. Dense trees rise higher on the left, while two pointed forms stand near the right edge, leaving a central gap aligned with the water. The low wall interrupts the downward slope, and fine lines indicate branches and railings beyond it. The narrowing paving, dark trees and pale opening establish a clear sequence from the near slope to the sea and distant land.

Broad strokes establish the grey-violet pavement, with changes of direction still visible across its surface. Repeated black-green paint gives the trees their density; short beige and brown marks add trunks, wall and railing. The sea forms an almost level band of pale mint green, while the sky is lightly spread in greyed white. Thick darkness close by and thinner light colour in the distance create depth through value and paint weight.

Li Zhenhong received rigorous drawing instruction and tonal training shaped by Russian academic methods. His landscapes are organised through direct observation and measured value relations. In this sketch he reduces the site to a few large forms—paving, trees, wall and water—while preserving a coherent route through them. The unusually broad foreground is purposeful: it carries the space and makes the descending paving the main spatial structure of the composition.

Style and context

Weihai lies at the eastern end of the Shandong Peninsula and faces the Yellow Sea on three sides. Weihai Hotel stands by Half Moon Bay on the city’s east coast. The painting looks towards the shoreline between a descending path, a wall and planted grounds; the low headland and small dark marks on the water remain subordinate to the bright opening of sea and sky.

Plein-air landscape brought roads, walls and gardens into modern painting as structures that determine how a place is entered and seen. Weihai Hotel Sketch delays the sea until the end of the slope. Dark trees compress the middle distance, then pale water and sky release it. Li Zhenhong makes the approach itself the subject, grounding the coastal view in the painter’s position on site.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Zhenhong was born in Jilin in 1970 and graduated from Northeast Normal University in 1992. Its art curriculum emphasised drawing, tonal hierarchy and methods influenced by Russian painting, giving him a foundation for organising pictures through structure and value.

He later carried that training into plein-air landscape. Rather than describing every detail, he first establishes mountains, buildings and banks through broad tonal masses, then uses shorter marks to distinguish light and material. Direct observation therefore remains tied to a coherent spatial order.

Li is a member of the Jilin Provincial Artists Association and the Jilin Provincial Oil Painting Society. Documented works include Yellow House by the River, Sea Imagery and Summer Sunlight; across these subjects he continues to work through observed tone and structure.
