Art appreciation

Slopes enter from both sides and frame the central water. The lower land on the left follows the blue edge into the distance; the right rises more steeply, interrupted by narrow vertical groups of dark trees. Small pale dwellings sit near the vegetation, with minute animal forms scattered across the grass. These marks remain subordinate to the landscape while making habitation, grazing, and movement part of the place.

Colour separates the terrain. Yellow-green and olive strokes spread across the near fields, saturated blue-violet extends horizontally through the water, and touches of pink, orange, and pale violet animate the sunlit hills. The conifers form deep vertical accents that break the bright expanses and clarify scale. Adjacent blocks of colour retain the speed of field observation, allowing the light to feel direct and clean.

Li works across landscape and figure painting and repeatedly places people and animals within open terrain. His academic training helps explain the firm shoreline and layered slopes, while that recurring subject choice accounts for the dwellings and animals remaining visible within the broad valley. The expansive land remains the principal subject, while dwellings and animals prevent it from becoming an uninhabited spectacle. High-key colour answers the observed light and is disciplined by the dark trees and pale structures.

Modern Chinese landscape painting has repeatedly used field study to ask how oil paint can record a region’s light while preserving the spatial intelligence of Chinese landscape traditions. Xinjiang presents strong sun, long distances, and pronounced contrasts. Xinjiang Scenery keeps mountains, water, trees, and habitation recognisable, then reconstructs their atmosphere through interlocking warm and cool colour fields.

Li graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. That training gives the slopes and shoreline a stable structure, while his contemplative approach allows small traces of settlement to enter the whole without disrupting it. The high-value greens and blues correspond to bright grass and water; dark trees and light dwellings regulate their rhythm. Immediate observation and considered composition remain in balance.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Li Tiexiang was born in 1954 to a Mongolian family, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 1984, and now lives in Shenzhen. He serves as chairman of the Shenzhen Dafen Artists Association and belongs to the China Artists Association, Liaoning Artists Association, and the Shenzhen Artists Association council. In 2014, he was named an Outstanding Expert of Longgang District, Shenzhen.

His academic training established a firm approach to drawing and spatial structure. He works across landscape and figurative subjects, using changes in colour, paint texture and light to describe northern terrain, people and animals. This recurring attention to open land and its inhabitants provides a documented link between his training and the subjects in these paintings.

Li held a solo oil-painting exhibition in China in 1997 and two solo exhibitions in Tokyo in 2001. Mother and Child received an Excellence Award in the Liaoning section of the 10th National Art Exhibition in 2004. Naqu Girl was selected for the 4th Beijing International Art Biennale in 2010, and The Call from Afar entered the 2nd National Young and Middle-Aged Oil Painting Exhibition in 2013. A further solo exhibition was held at the Guangzhou Museum of Art in 2014.
