Art appreciation

The ochre slope occupies most of the lower half and rises towards a green field at the centre. A track curves from dark trees on the left into the middle distance, while flatter green ground extends at right. Uneven tree groups gather right of centre and divide the broad sky. A few roof-like forms are partly hidden behind them, too small to identify a specific settlement. The enlarged foreground slope places the green field farther back, and the uneven tree line closes the middle distance beneath the broad sky.

Foreground paint has been dragged, scraped and deposited in layers. Earth yellow, ochre, grey-brown and violet-blue fragments intersect, and long pale strokes cut paths through the heavy ground. The bright green field is thinner and calmer. Dark green, brown-black and orange touches build the trees, with incised lines exposing trunks. Grey-white, pale yellow and restrained pink-violet lower the contrast of the sky. Changes in material separate the immediate soil from middle and far distance.

Liu Ping’s long commitment to plein-air painting gives him familiarity with the terrain of northern Shandong and with combining realist structure and substantial colour. The land remains spatially coherent while the nearest paint preserves rapid decisions made on site. The low viewpoint and large slope make resistance, route and surface change the central subjects of the landscape.

Style and context

Chishang Town lies in the southern mountains of Boshan District, Zibo, around the Zi River headwaters and beside the Lushan scenic area. Shandong Chishang Peak faces an ascending slope from a low viewpoint. Trees and distant roof forms follow the bright green field, joining settlement and mountain terrain in one view.

Plein-air painters have to organise topography, colour and depth before the light changes. Here the foreground carries unusual visual and material weight: thick paint reads first as accumulated earth, then the green clearing and dark trees steady the middle distance. Continuous depth remains intact, while scrapes, ridges and exposed layers intensify the physical character of the land.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
