Art appreciation

The main mountain extends across the upper register. Its rounded outline dips near the centre, where blue-violet openings distinguish one slope from the next. A dark group of trees stands below as the hinge between foreground fields and the mountain. From the lower right, a pale diagonal approaches the trees through adjoining areas of yellow and fresh green, separating two turns of the valley floor.

Several greens are layered in broad strokes, changing direction with the terrain. Thinner blue-violet passages read as cooler air within the folds of the mountain. Brown-black and deep green strokes compress the central trees, while yellow-green, cream and touches of ochre spread more freely across the foreground. Liu Ping leaves the junctions between colours exposed instead of sealing every form with a drawn edge, so the slopes retain movement and material weight.

Liu Ping’s realist landscapes are grounded in decades of plein-air work across China and Europe. Here he reduces the view to three principal weights: mountain, trees and fields. That decision suits an extended mountain landscape, where the overall structure matters more than scattered detail. The bright foreground preserves the seasonal light of the session, while the large green body establishes the enduring landform behind it.

Style and context

Lushan stands in the mountains south of Zibo, and Yiyuan Lushan is recognised as a national geopark. Continuous mountain bodies, slopes and vegetation define this regional setting. Shandong Lushan selects a wide mountain form and near fields, concentrating on the light and seasonal colour around the foot of the range.

The painting extends the modern realist and plein-air landscape tradition, using large shapes and a unified tonal structure to establish space. The green mountain is the principal mass, dark trees mark its base and light fields open the foreground. Blue-violet shadows describe the folds and temper the green, while exposed strokes retain the changing conditions of outdoor light.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
