Art appreciation

The two women sit close together in the lower-left part of the canvas. One extends her arm towards the orange-and-black fish while the other looks down, keeping both bodies turned away from the viewer. Their linked gesture creates a private line of attention across the bright water. The building’s pale wall holds this exchange against a stable vertical plane.

Cool greys build the high wall and dark oval doorway. Faces, arms and pale clothing receive finer shifts of warm and cool colour, while broad olive, grey-green and light-blue strokes loosen across the water. The orange fish provides a precise accent. On the right, yellow and deep green foliage breaks into angled marks that mingle with reflections and shade.

Hu Xuebo’s training at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute gave him a firm command of figure and composition, and his work often sets people within gardens or richly coloured everyday spaces. Here he avoids a formal portrait. The extended arm, answering gaze and fish organise the image, while wall, foliage and water support that exchange. The painting makes that shared act of looking its clearest record of the moment.

The New Classical Academic approach retains academic attention to anatomy, spatial construction and composition while admitting contemporary life and regional colour. Ordinary clothing, informal gestures and familiar settings can sustain a narrative without heroic or ceremonial poses.

Small Town Memory keeps the seated bodies and architectural recession coherent and legible, then loosens the surrounding wall, foliage and water into visible strokes. Hu Xuebo reserves the sharpest observation for faces, arms and the shared gaze. The interaction with the fish gives the scene its human centre, while colour preserves the particular light of an enclosed small-town garden beside the water.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Hu Xuebo was born in Chongqing in September 1972 and entered the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1993. His studies established the drawing, modelling and compositional methods that underpin his oil painting.

Hu's work is closely connected with Yunnan. He paints Miao and Yi women, gardens and everyday settings, combining carefully modelled figures with saturated colour drawn from clothing, flowers and the surrounding landscape. Over time, these subjects have allowed him to move from general academic exercises towards a more specific account of life and visual culture in southwest China.

His works include Miao Girl, Beauty — Gazing at Fish, Kunming Welcomes You, Ethnic Girl and Watching Flowers Bloom. He participated in the New Classical Academic Oil Painting Exhibition — When Colorful Yunnan Meets Shenzhen in 2020 and the Entering Colorful Yunnan — Welcome COP15 exhibition at the Yunnan Literature and Art Museum in 2021. A solo exhibition was held at the Wuhua District Cultural Art Center in Kunming in 2022.
