Art appreciation

A low horizon supports the trees while the ochre ground occupies much of the lower half. The tallest golden group stands just left of centre, and lower clusters spread along the slope to the right. Dark trunks recur through the bright foliage. A cool green band holds the foreground, and only a narrow strip of violet-blue ridge appears beyond. Changes in height, density and temperature make the terrain legible at once.

Broad sweeps and dragged marks lay down the ground in ochre, earth red and grey-green, leaving deposits and scraped passages visible. The crowns are built from shorter, denser touches of yellow, orange and brown, with small light notes suggesting sunlit leaves. Deep brown verticals establish the trunks. Paint is heavier and more open close to the viewer, while the ridge and sky are thinner and flatter; handling as well as colour creates distance.

Liu Ping has devoted more than four decades to realist landscape and has sustained a long practice of painting outdoors. His choice of wide ground planes and repeated upright trees answers the demands of direct observation. Large strokes first secure the overall pitch of the slope, then smaller marks register variations of light through autumn foliage. Individual leaves are not catalogued, yet the landform, illumination and physical character of the Lushan woodland remain specific.

Style and context

Lushan lies in the mountainous south of Zibo, Shandong, and the Yiyuan Lushan area is recognised as Zibo’s first national geopark. Its terrain and seasonal vegetation offer a layered subject for painting outdoors. Shandong Lushan Series concentrates on slopes, woodland and a distant ridge.

The work belongs to a modern realist tradition of plein-air landscape. The land remains credible while brushwork stays visible on the surface. Horizontal slopes support upright groves, and cool foreground green with violet-blue distance tempers the dominant gold. The Lushan woodland remains recognisable, while colour area, mark density and paint thickness also reorganise the observed terrain.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
