Painting analysis

Three vessel-like forms stand across a field of geometric color, each releasing a burst of thin stems that spread outward like small fireworks. The objects still belong to the language of still life, but Yang Shiliang pushes them toward abstraction: the vases can also read as flasks, the flowers as sparks, and the background as a stage of yellow, orange, blue, and violet planes. Near the lower area, the letters of “LOVE YOU” add a direct emotional sign inside this otherwise playful formal structure.

The painting is built through pattern and surface rather than careful naturalistic description. Vase patterns, stem lines, and scratched color blocks all compete gently for attention, creating a rhythm that moves across the horizontal image. The palette knife gives the oil paint a dry, tactile edge; instead of smoothing the objects into illusion, Yang lets shapes remain graphic, decorative, and slightly unstable, which gives the still life its lively modernist charge.

Still Life: The Equation of Love works because it holds two moods at once: the order of a tabletop arrangement and the surprise of a small celebration. Yang’s palette-knife method is central to this effect. His training in Chinese and Western academic systems allows him to keep recognizable objects while loosening them into signs, rhythms, and emotional fragments. The visible “LOVE YOU” text and firework-like stems give the painting a contemporary graphic quality, turning still life into a field where object, message, and abstraction meet.

Artist introduction

Yang Shiliang (born 1964, Jilin City) graduated from the Art Department of Northeast Normal University and later studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. His teachers included Yan Zhushi, Song Huimin, Pan Shixun, Zhu Naizheng, and Guo Xiaoguang, giving him a foundation that spans academic realism, expressive abstraction, and modern Chinese pictorial thinking.

His practice occupies a position between expressionism, impressionism, and Chinese yixiang painting. Yang is known for using the palette knife as his primary tool, treating oil paint with a large-scale xieyi approach associated with Chinese freehand painting. This method allows him to join Western oil’s physical materiality with an Eastern concern for spirit resonance, movement, and expressive force.

Over decades of practice, Yang has developed a personal language that brings together Chinese painting and oil painting, old and new, traditional and reformed, Eastern and Western, classical and modern. His work has attracted sustained collector interest and is valued for the way it lets different artistic systems collide without losing painterly vitality.
