The morning air is humid and still, the kind that slows everything down. A single stone arch rises from each bank, voussoirs radiating outward from the keystone, each block weathered to a different shade of grey-brown, joints softened by moss-green where the damp collects. Behind the bridge, traditional Lingnan buildings climb in layered tiers — whitewashed walls under dark tiled roofs, the kind of architecture that has lined the waterways of southern China for centuries. They are not precisely drawn; they sit in the middle distance the way a familiar place settles in memory, recognizable in shape but softened by years of absence. The water below holds broken reflections of the arch, loose strokes of darker tone where the surface moves.

Lin paints the bridge not as documentation but as something lived-in. The stonework uses a thin, controlled wash — warm ochre where light catches directly, cool violet-grey in the shadow of each joint — but the tones sit side by side rather than blended, so the surface seems to shift temperature with the changing light.
