Art appreciation

The bridge rises diagonally from the lower right and turns towards the village at the centre. Its stepped deck and parapets narrow as they enter the foliage. The arch opens over the dark green water to the left, while white walls and black roofs appear behind the trees. This arrangement makes the crossing part of a larger route between bank, bridge, lane, and houses.

Lin Mingchen builds the stonework through temperature rather than hard contour. Warm ochre catches the upper surfaces of the steps and parapet; violet-grey settles into joints and shaded blocks. Green reflected light spreads across the water and returns in the plants growing beside the masonry. Short, square marks describe worn steps, while looser strokes allow willow leaves and grasses to overlap the bridge. The construction keeps its weight without separating sharply from the humid setting.

No figure is present, yet the stepped deck, softened edges, and road beyond record repeated passage. Light directs attention up the right-hand approach, while the shadow beneath the arch reveals the thickness of the old structure. Lin's training in academic construction keeps the bridge spatially clear, and his sustained study of colour explains the careful division of warm stone, cool shade, and green water. Worn steps, patched masonry, reflected green and the narrow road establish a bridge still embedded in village use.

Regional landscape in modern Chinese oil painting often brings academic construction into contact with lived local surroundings. Lin Mingchen studied at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts under the French-trained painter Fu Baxiong, gaining a strong command of structure, light, and colour. In Ancient Bridge, those tools serve a Lingnan village environment shaped by water, paths, houses, and dense growth.

Lin keeps the bridge embedded among the bank, tiled roofs, walls, and foliage. Precise temperature changes do more than brighten the scene: ochre lifts the stone, blue-violet deepens its reflection, and dark green gathers the shade. His long engagement with colour theory becomes practical here, restoring an old structure to the humid, inhabited setting that gives it meaning.

About the artist

Lin Mingchen (born 1941, Hong Kong) is a Chinese oil painter, color scientist, and Professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Trained in the five-year undergraduate Oil Painting Department at Guangzhou Academy beginning in 1961, he studied under French-trained painter Fu Baxiong, placing him in a direct lineage that connects European academic oil painting to mainland Chinese art education.

He currently serves as Vice President of the China National Artists Association and Honorary President of the Hong Kong Oil Painting Research Society, and is based in Hong Kong. His career achievements include four oil paintings selected for the National Art Exhibition, three pastels accepted into the National Pastel Exhibition, and the Gold Award in Oil Painting at the Hong Kong Painters Joint Exhibition.

His works appear in anthologies such as "A Century of Chinese Oil Painting" and "Ten Chinese Oil Painters," and his nearly 400,000-character monograph "Applied Color Science for Art" addresses colour theory for artists. He has held nearly twenty solo exhibitions across China and abroad and remains active as a painter, educator, and writer.
