Art appreciation

The composition narrows from both sides towards the centre. Black-green trees press against the left edge, while a dark wooded band follows the ochre slope down on the right. Between them lies a yellow-green opening. A pale edge curves from the lower left towards the middle and disappears repeatedly behind shadow and land. Bright green terrain occupies the central distance, backed by mountain ridges that rise in successive blue-grey layers.

Short strokes of deep green, blue-black and brown build the near woodland, leaving its edges broken. Broader angular marks establish the ochre bank and give it a clear position within the surrounding green. The central area is flatter, combining yellow-green with pale blue and grey-white so that near ground and water colour meet in one continuous band. The mountains are thinner and cooler. Liu Ping separates near and far through thickness, temperature, overlap and changing edges.

Liu Ping’s sustained outdoor practice has trained him to condense complicated terrain into a few weight-bearing masses. Near woodland encloses the reservoir basin, while layered mountains rise behind its central opening. Vegetation and banks interrupt the irregular shoreline; broken contours and overlapping colour blocks register that partly screened terrain.

Sancha Reservoir lies within the mountain terrain of Yiyuan, Shandong, where water, irregular banks and surrounding ridges form one landscape. Sancha Reservoir, Yiyuan, Shandong concentrates on a basin partly screened by woodland. The interrupted shore records the way trees and slopes limit a view from the bank.

Reservoir landscape joins a horizontal opening to rising ground. Liu Ping presses dark woodland against the near edges, follows a pale shore towards the centre and then releases the view through blue-grey ridges. The spatial structure continues realist landscape practice, while exposed marks register changing light and the density of vegetation observed outdoors.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
