Art appreciation

The cobalt sky occupies roughly the upper third. A sloping headland enters from the left, and a broad field of blue-violet sea opens to its right. Pale yellow ground narrows towards the centre. Two small white figures stand apart near the shoreline, both facing the open water. Their size makes the breadth of the coast clear and returns the large colour fields to a recognisable human encounter.

Broad dragged marks and lighter abrasions animate the sky. The water is denser, built from ultramarine, violet and cobalt strokes. Paint is thickest on the headland, where grey-green, lilac, cream and scattered bright notes accumulate in relief. Granular yellow ground, scraping and changes of thickness make the shoreline a meeting point between unlike surfaces. Small red notes on the figures remain sharp against the pale beach.

Yang Fuxu often moves from close study of rural and natural textures towards contemporary formal experiment. Coast follows that path: land, water and people remain identifiable, but detail is compressed into impasto and large shapes. He conveys openness through the direct relation between the two figures, the immense blue field and the resistant mass of land.

Style and context

Expressionist painters used intensified colour, simplified form and visible brushwork to heighten the experience of a place. Later figurative artists applied those methods to landscape, keeping the terrain recognisable while allowing colour and material to become principal agents of meaning.

Coast is a semi-abstract landscape in this lineage. Cobalt sky, violet sea, grey-green headland and pale shore establish a coherent setting, while impasto and scraping bring the painted surface forward. The two figures reconnect those expansive zones with human observation, and Yang Fuxu’s long interest in the physical character of land is carried into the headland’s dense paint.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yang Fuxu (born 1980) graduated from the Guangxi Academy of Arts and later undertook advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and through a China Federation of Literary and Art Circles programme for emerging cultural practitioners. He is a member of the China Artists Association. This training supports both his academic command of form and his continued experiments with material and composition.

His practice includes the Homeland, Duilianggou, Dancer and Brilliant Night series. Homeland and Duilianggou use close views of rural ground; Dancer builds rhythms resembling bodily movement through leaning, crossing and extended trunks; Brilliant Night places artificial light within dense dark layers.

His exhibition record includes Fengyu Southwest in 2013, a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme in 2019 and selection for the national Era, Portrait exhibition in 2023. Across these series, recognisable landscape forms increasingly give way to thick paint, broad colour fields and rhythmic structure.
