Art appreciation

Large areas of fresh green and earthy yellow open the foreground, divided by curved bands that suggest changes in slope. A pale ochre passage runs diagonally towards the central settlement and links it to the foreground fields. Buildings are reduced to small angular notes within overlapping dark green and brown trees, while a brighter hill rises to the right. The blue ridge stretches behind the entire group and holds the village within a valley setting.

Wide strokes, scraping and uneven layers of green describe the nearer fields, with blue-grey and ochre indicating turns in the ground. Handling tightens in the middle distance, where roofs, trunks and crowns are assembled from shorter blocks. The distant ridge becomes a flatter, cooler blue band. By changing the size and density of his marks with distance, Liu Ping keeps the village readable while the surrounding terrain retains the greater share of the canvas.

Liu Ping’s long commitment to plein-air painting has taken him through many regions of China. The small scale of the buildings reveals what matters in this view: settlement is understood through its place in the terrain. Broad foreground marks retain the openness of the fields, concentrated middle-distance strokes register habitation, and the ridge supplies the larger geography. Natural landform and lived space are joined along one continuous line of sight.

Style and context

Mountain villages in the Lushan area are closely tied to slopes, woodland and distant ridges. Xiaofeng Village, Lushan, Shandong places habitation at the centre of this terrain. Buildings occupy only a small part of the surface, and the surrounding fields and mountains determine the extent of the view.

Village landscape has been an important subject in modern Chinese realist painting, often used to examine the dependence of settlement on landform through outdoor study. Liu Ping encloses small roof shapes within broad fields and then woodland and mountains. The space remains representational, while changes in stroke width, density and temperature make the land itself the main subject.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
