Art appreciation

Tall trunks enter from the bottom and continue beyond the upper edge. Two central trees lean away from each other, while a thicker, straighter trunk at the right acts as a visual support. Slender stems pass between them, and broken limbs create lateral connections. A compact dark canopy sits behind this open structure; the bright ground below makes every shift of balance legible.

Gold, ochre, grey, and white are layered thickly over the trunks. Scraped areas recall peeling bark and reinforce their twisting movement. The background is built from close, short strokes of deep green, then cut by quick linear branches. Sky and grass are handled more broadly, giving the complex middle register room to move. Changes of thickness and direction turn still trees into a sequence of bodily actions.

Yang describes the trees in his Dancer series as carriers of childhood memory. He does not add faces or a literal narrative. Instead, upright, tilted, and reaching forms establish a community of postures: one tree appears to brace, another to turn, another to extend towards its neighbour. Their bark and damage remain specific. Growth, support, and remembered companionship are therefore held within the natural structure of the grove.

Style and context

Expressive landscape has often transformed natural forms into rhythm and emotion, but its force depends on how closely a painter attends to structure. In Dancer Series, differences of girth, knots, broken limbs, and overlap remain explicit. The modern shift lies in the act of seeing: the stance of a tree becomes bodily gesture, and the arrangement of a grove becomes choreography.

Yang Fuxu's practice moves between rural memory and formal experiment, with home and trees recurring across several bodies of work. Here those concerns are bound to visible decisions. The dark canopy provides a stage-like depth, bright ground anchors the feet of the trees, and alternating vertical and diagonal trunks establish movement. The leaning trunks, crossed branches and repeated intervals give the woodland a dance-like rhythm.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Yang Fuxu (born 1980) graduated from the Guangxi Academy of Arts and later undertook advanced study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and through a China Federation of Literary and Art Circles programme for emerging cultural practitioners. He is a member of the China Artists Association. This training supports both his academic command of form and his continued experiments with material and composition.

His practice includes the Homeland, Duilianggou, Dancer and Brilliant Night series. Homeland and Duilianggou use close views of rural ground; Dancer builds rhythms resembling bodily movement through leaning, crossing and extended trunks; Brilliant Night places artificial light within dense dark layers.

His exhibition record includes Fengyu Southwest in 2013, a Bronze Award in the New Wheat Field programme in 2019 and selection for the national Era, Portrait exhibition in 2023. Across these series, recognisable landscape forms increasingly give way to thick paint, broad colour fields and rhythmic structure.
