Dancer Series

Tall trees lean and cross in the half-light of a forest clearing, their pale trunks bent at angles that make them look less like trees and more like dancers paused mid-movement — arms raised, backs arched, weight shifted onto one leg. The ground is covered in last autumn's soft leaves, and the canopy overhead breaks into scattered fragments of sky so that the light reaching the forest floor is filtered and scattered, as if inside a church made of wood and air. There is something private about this painting, as if the viewer has walked into a room where dancers are rehearsing and no one has told them to stop. Oil on canvas, 160 × 120 cm.

The trunks are painted in layers of grey-white with patches of warmer brown where bark has peeled, while the canopy dissolves into a mist of olive-green and purple where individual leaves lose their shape and become atmosphere. At the base, the undergrowth is built from short, dense strokes in brown and green — more texture than detail, the kind of painting that looks less like specific trees the closer you get and more like a single breathing thing. The brushwork shifts between thicker paint on the foreground trunks and thinner washes in the background, creating a sense that the trees in front are reaching toward you while everything behind them is slowly pulling away.

The personification connects to a deep tradition in Chinese art — bamboo and orchid were never just plants, they were extensions of character. Here the same idea is translated into oil: trunk becomes spine, branch becomes arm, canopy becomes an unfinished gesture that could settle into a pose at any moment. At 160 × 120 cm, this painting needs a wall like a stage — it demands space, and it repays distance, and the more room you give it the more it gives back.
