Peach Blossom Grove is a landscape of flowering ground rather than decorative bloom. Liu Ping lets the grove appear through damp greens, earth browns and small warm touches scattered along the riverbank, so the title feels rooted in soil and weather, not in a polished floral display. Water sits quietly within the land, partly hidden by grasses and low growth, while the mountain slopes behind give the scene the stillness of a rural valley after rain.

The foreground carries the painting’s most intimate energy. Broken strokes suggest grass, blossom, mud and uneven bank all at once; nothing is over-described, yet the surface feels alive with small natural interruptions. Farther back, the brushwork opens into darker slopes and softer mountain forms, allowing the eye to move from close, tactile ground toward a broader field of air. The painting is not about a spectacular season; it is about the modest persistence of a place where flowers, water and earth belong together.

Its realism comes from the pressure of looking at land over time, not from literal botanical description.

In art-historical terms, the work is closer to the Barbizon and Corot tradition of ordinary outdoor ground than to ornamental flower painting. Liu’s touch is firmer and more compact, using short, accumulated strokes to bind flowering growth, wet bank and distant slope into one field structure. The result is a contemporary Chinese realist landscape in which the peach grove is not a motif placed on the land, but part of the land’s working surface.

Artist Profile

Artist introduction

Liu Ping was born in 1953 in Zibo, Shandong province, and now resides in Beijing with over forty years devoted to oil painting creation and research. He holds the title of Associate Research Curator and is a founding member of the Zibo Oil Painting and Mural Art Research Society. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School (now Shandong University of Arts) from 1976, later completing the graduate programme in oil painting creation at Renmin University of China’s School of Art.

His practice centres on realist landscape painting with rigorous form and rich, substantial colour. He has maintained a decades-long commitment to plein-air work, painting across China’s mountains and rivers as well as multiple European locations, achieving works that combine the freshness of on-site observation with the completeness of studio composition. He currently serves as president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum, and senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. His memberships include the Chinese Oil Painting Society, Shandong Provincial Artists Association, standing director of the France-China Artists Association, and consultant to the Italian Cultural Development Association.

He has held multiple solo and group exhibitions in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan, and Zibo, with works broadly collected by domestic and international art institutions and private collectors.
