Art appreciation

The pink-violet grove rises through the foreground towards the centre. Colour is densest on the right and lighter on the left, creating a diagonal advance. A dark green and brown tree belt crosses the middle, leaving one pale blue opening near the centre. Yellow land and a blue ridge narrow behind it. This sequence of near blossom, middle woodland and distant mountain keeps the scene unmistakably representational despite the strength of the foreground colour.

Liu Ping does not describe flowers one by one. Pink, purple-red, crimson and cream are layered in heavy strokes, then crossed with scratches, droplets and short lines that suggest branches and clusters. The tree belt is pressed into firmer mixtures of green, blue-black and brown. Thinner, flatter yellow-green and blue define the distance. The physical thickness of the near paint becomes a measure of proximity as well as abundance.

Decades of plein-air practice allow Liu Ping to identify the governing colour of complex vegetation before resolving its parts. In a grove at full bloom, individual blossoms are absorbed into a large pink-violet impression. He therefore uses density and direction to convey scale instead of botanical detail. His realist foundation holds the land together, while open material traces record the immediate visual force of the flowering trees.

Style and context

A peach grove brings season, terrain and plant density into one landscape. At full bloom, individual flowers join into large pink-violet masses, with trunks and paths partly concealed. Liu Ping preserves this overall view and lets the dark middle trees, pale blue opening and ridge support the near colour.

From Impressionist studies of light to contemporary representational landscape, painters have used separated touches and deposits of paint to describe flowering vegetation. Peach Blossom Grove keeps a clear foreground, middle belt and distance while allowing pink-violet paint to dominate. Realist landform and active surface remain in balance, giving the work an expressive but firmly recognisable subject.

Artist Profile

About the artist

Liu Ping was born in Zibo, Shandong, in 1953 and now lives in Beijing. He has worked in oil painting and research for more than four decades. He studied at the Shandong May Seventh Art School from 1976 and later completed postgraduate study in oil painting at Renmin University of China.

His practice centres on realist landscape and sustained plein-air work. Painting across different regions of China and in Europe led him to establish terrain first through broad colour masses, then add vegetation and changing light with loaded strokes and scraped lines. Immediate colour and a complete spatial structure therefore develop together.

Liu is president of the Zibo Contemporary Oil Painting Art Research Institute, director of the Liu Ping Oil Painting Art Museum and a senior painter at Shandong Painting Academy. He has shown work in Lyon, Paris, Beijing, Shenzhen, Jinan and Zibo; his Lushan, Chishang and Yiyuan series continue his study of Shandong terrain.
